Viewing Documents In Kinetic Cloud Broswer (NOT DOWNLOAD)

Hi everyone, we are currently implementing kinetic…we are going paperless on the shopfloor and shop floor workers will need to view work instruction and drawings relating to the job.

We have purchased DocStar and expected for the documents to just pop up so that they can be viewed but it seems the only option throughout kinetic is to download and then view afterwards.

As we are using android based tablets with limited storage, and user computer knowledge is limited, i really do not want them having to download documents to the tablet.

Has anyone found a way around this? I have logged an Epicor Idea ( KIN-I-4485) but i cannot believe that its not standard function to be able to just click a hyperlink and open the document online somehow without downloading.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are literally just running into this. Has anybody done anything with this yet? We are looking for a quick way to add back to this the view from this exact place.

I’m going to talk to our in-house dev about this tomorrow. Any good place to start? I’m going to have him look at the attachments where the view link does exist to start.

This will be a MUST as people adopt and are forced into Browser-based. I’m going to vote on your idea now.

Yes. I’m sick though. Be back later.

Might need some modification in its current form, but here is the gist.

Anything you can retrieve the bytes for in PDF form can be print previewed.

Hi Joseph,

Great that you have voted for my idea! Thank you.

We have not found a solution to this yet (admittedly i have moved onto more pressing matters!) so if you do get something working i would be very keen to know.

In the meantime i will look at the suggestion below from @klincecum

Thank you @klincecum - This looks a great start! I’ll have my Dev take a look at it, it’s well beyond me…

All,

I’m not sure of the details, but our dev. was able to find a way to link the File Name using an OPEN URL call to have the PDFs pull up in the MES. It works great, for us, for now. Ideally, we would be able to use the “file:///FILENAME” convention to open in another tab, but this is a GREAT second.

I’ve attached a screenshot. Thank you to all!

More than you want to know about the file:// URI Scheme:

I’ll see if I can get some of the technical stuff and post.

@r0lovic - See if you can add some explanation on the “how to” of this. Thanks!

Now that I can see it on other than a phone screen, I see what I need to see.

what do you see wise one?

Just a URI.

Is it just a call to that url through an out of the box tool?

Looks like it.

Right on!

One can spin up IIS and map a directory to files and serve them to the browser. The trick, if it’s important, is to maintain the original file access. If the web server has access to every file, then so will every user. :person_shrugging:
