I used Adaptect's AIC 7899 Ultra 160. It's a 4 channel card, I've got 3
sets of 18 gig drives with a 30 gig for a boot drive. The card and the
drives were very painless to set up. The card gives me hardware redundancy
and a selection of raid schemes to choose from. The card was pricey
($1,000+ ) but it controls ALL of the drives and I still have a channel to
expand with. It also leaves the onboard scsi channels open to handle tape
backups. It sits in a Tyan MB w/a gig of ram and Two 1.2 gig AMD
processors. Memory buss is 233mhz.

We are planning to go to 5.0 this weekend and are finally considering taking
Vantage off of our file server and putting it on a dedicated server. We
have a PC here which we could use as the server but I'm not sure if it is
good enough to act as the Vantage server. I checked the Epicor site and it
meets the specs, but I wanted some 'real-world' advice. The specs of the PC
are:

P2 400 Xeon, 512 Meg RAM, 2 Gig SCSI.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks,

Sarah

NT loves RAM, Vantage Loves RAM, I'm not sure if you can every have to much
RAM.

Sarah,

It's adequacy really depends upon how many users you're going to
throw at it. Also, how big are your db files?

If you have less than twenty users, and maybe one or two RB,
ODBC or Results users it will probably work OK. OTOH, our
Vantage installation is 2.5GB, including our 950MB database.

have fun,
john

Sorry, I should have specified. We have 19 office users and 5 data
collection users.

Our database (d1 and b1 files) are a total of 355 MB.

Thanks for the feedback,

Sarah

I would double up on the RAM and I would do something about the drive space.
Both have come down considerably in price. I am sure Vantage will run on a
machine equipped as specced below, but I am afraid such a system makes it
"run" and not "fly". Take your number of users in account and the size of
your DB. I am afraid that when you go by Epicor specs you don't allow
yourself hardly any room for future growth....

We have a Compaq Proliant SERVER with a pII 450 with 512 megs of ram for
vantage, with 20 users, and it gets slow at times, but it works. We also
have exchange server running on it.

I have a Compaq AP400 Professional WORKSTATION, pII-450 with 512 megs of
ram, for a test vantage server. It has a SCSI hard drive. And runs
solidworks with no problem.

The workstation takes about 3 to 5 times longer to run reports, open
vantage, etc. than the server and that's with ONE USER.

I would STRONGLY recommend against using a workstation for a live vantage
server. A workstation video card is not meant to handle 20 database
connections. A workstation's hard disk controller is designed for 1 user,
not 20.

I might consider using a workstation as a crystal enterprise web server,
with 5 users or less.

Part of the necessary cost of running a database is the hardware it runs on.

It is my recommendation that you stick with vantage on the file server until
you are ready to purchase a dedicated SERVER.

At Perspectives it was highly recommended to have at least two disks - one
for OS and one (or more) for Vantage. You might want to look into adding
disks. A couple 9GB disks mirrored (Raid 1) would be good even if you have
to do software mirroring 9if SCSI controller doesn't handle it). You would
also then have room for test databases, attached documents, etc... Trying
to have OS and Vantage on one 2GB disk might be asking for a headache down
the road.

I appreciate the feedback very much. I realized I mistyped. It is actually
a 4 GB SCSI (2 disks) right now, but we were thinking of partitioning it all
into one disk.

Oooowww.... Good one, Todd. Our first Vantage server was a little bit
hampered by this. So I added 5 more physical SCSI HD's. Does wonders....
On the new server I have dual processors. Made it a little bit faster, but
in hindsight wasn't worth the added expense.

Running anything on a machine with Exchange on it is asking for it to be
slow. Exchange will eat every piece of ram it can find. The reason it gets
slow is that it has to swap out to disk all the time.

These guys are right. We have a Dell (server) Poweredge 2300 P2, 400 MHz
512MB Ram, C-drive = 2G and Vantage-drive = 6G. 11 users and 2 data
collection. It's not dragging, but reports run slow and people have to wait
now and then. We are out of disk and pushing the horsepower as much as I
care to.

I just installed Vantage 5.0 on a test machine - Celeron 850Mhz workstation.
We'll see how that holds up for the evaluation and testing, but it won't see
the usage the main server does. I'm planning on having sufficient amount of
RAM and Disk on a P3-700 server with teamed NIC's when we finally go live.

I believe in putting in hardware that will handle the load. This cuts down
on other problems later, and is cheaper in the long-run.

Sarah,

It's adequacy really depends upon how many users you're going to
throw at it. Also, how big are your db files?

If you have less than twenty users, and maybe one or two RB,
ODBC or Results users it will probably work OK. OTOH, our
Vantage installation is 2.5GB, including our 950MB database.

have fun,

Luckily, we're only running vantage 3 and not 5, or it would probably be
slower. The main point I was trying to get across is that in my particular
case, a SERVER with Vantage (25 users), and exchange, runs reports, queries,
and logs into vantage, 3-5 times faster than a WORKSTATION running vantage
only -- Even with the workstation having the same processor and ram as the
server.

(these stats are assuming the vantage server /test server is logged into
from the outside, by a 98 client.)

The reason the server performs better is because it is more optimised for
network requests, while the workstation is designed to better serve the user
that is sitting in front of it.

Just one more item on the exchange server issue:

How often do you have to reboot your exchange server? It's not often here,
but does happen more than rebooting the Vantage server. Do you want to open
your Vantage database to all the possibilities the come along with having
exchange on the same server?
Just a thought. I'd better stop, I'll have some paranoid plot loose soon.

Haven't had to reboot in the last month that I can remember.

We had a consultant come in and set it up. It's pretty rock solid, though
in the morning when everyone's logging into vantage and everyone's checking
their e-mail, it does get temporarily bogged down.

We plan on eventually putting exchange on another server before we go live
with 5.

Sarah:

When I got here 4 years ago we had Vantage running on one server with
everything else in the world also running on it - all on one partition!!

The first thing I did when we went from 2.7 to 3.0 was add a 4gb SCSI drive
and put Vantage only on that drive. Still had the same server, but there
was a remarkable improvement in access times, etc.

Then while I was getting 4.0 ready it was running on a 450 PIII, 256 RAM,
14gb IDE hd (now, don't attack me for using IDE. Sometimes you gotta take
what you can get) running NTWS. When we went live on 4.0 I made it an NT
Server, added another 256 RAM, gave Vantage it's very own 10gb partition
(overkill for us, but I sleep good at night) and Vantage is the only thing
on that box. It's been basically set it and forget it ever since. I have
16 users and 8 dc seats. My d1 and b1 are around 375mb.

I added a couple 2gb SCSI drives and partitioned them as a single volume to
get started on 5.0 and they've been ok too. I do have a new Dell PowerEdge
sitting in a box chomping at the bit to get out. That's gonna be the 5.0
server sometime within the next couple weeks.

Anyways, back to your original concern. What you have is adequate if
Vantage is the only thing you're gonna run on it and to add to Patrick's
comment, for Vantage think RAM and hd space more so than processor speed.

I appreciate the feedback very much. I realized I mistyped. It is actually
a 4 GB SCSI (2 disks) right now, but we were thinking of partitioning it all
into one disk.

Paul, When you add physical hard drives like that, do you then spread the Vantage Database out across those drive in multiple extents to spread out the disk access?

I'd love to know the details and where you saw the most improvement.

Oooowww.... Good one, Todd. Our first Vantage server was a little bit
hampered by this. So I added 5 more physical SCSI HD's. Does wonders....
On the new server I have dual processors. Made it a little bit faster, but
in hindsight wasn't worth the added expense.

Trying
to have OS and Vantage on one 2GB disk might be asking for a headache down
the road.

Thanks,

Sarah
