Server specs for 5.0

"I do have a new Dell PowerEdge sitting in a box chomping at the bit to get
out. That's gonna be the 5.0 server sometime within the next couple weeks."

Terry, care to share your new server configuration? Model, Raid Level,
memory, and anything else pertinent.

Randy:

See my earlier post with that information. As far as RAID goes, never used
any up till now. Never had the equipment to do that. I take great care to
police my backups. This is the first "real" server I've bought since I've
been here. When I was instructed to configure a new box for one of the
engineers, Dell had a great deal and I was able to get a new server and only
pay ? price for the engineer's computer.

Anyhow, I'm planning on going with level 1 RAID, hence the 2 18gb's. On
that thought, any one care to share from experience?

Terry,

You would be far better off with 4 - 9-gig drives instead of 2 - 18-gig
drives. Much better performance. Along the same lines - buy 10,000 rpm
SCSI drives if you can.

Raid 1 is fine - but make sure you buy a true RAID controller - do not use a
NT software mirror ( a hardware RAID controller will be much faster and
more reliable than a software mirror ).

When you get the box - turn off the RAID controller's write cache. Only use
the read cache. If you leave the write cache on and the box crashes then
what ever was in memory on the RAID card will be lost.

Good luck,

Todd Anderson

I used Adaptect's AIC 7899 Ultra 160. It's a 4 channel card, I've got 3
sets of 18 gig drives with a 30 gig for a boot drive. The card and the
drives were very painless to set up. The card gives me hardware redundancy
and a selection of raid schemes to choose from. The card was pricey
($1,000+ ) but it controls ALL of the drives and I still have a channel to
expand with. It also leaves the onboard scsi channels open to handle tape
backups. It sits in a Tyan MB w/a gig of ram and Two 1.2 gig AMD
processors. Memory buss is 233mhz.
