Agree with all those that say experience over letters.

I have an 8 client(mixed O/S, PC/Laptops), 3 server system (NT, 2000
Exchange Server, SBS/EXCH SERV 5.5) between 3 stories at home. I have two

I went to a MCSE boot camp a few years ago and really wasn't impressed by
the company's teachings and the official MS curriculum/doctrine.
Nowadays when hiring IT staff, I tend to ignore any suffixes, and head
straight for the experience section on resume's. I have found that the most
experienced applicants usually have the lowest number of initials after
their name, nor do they tend to value those very highly. I do quiz
applicants extensively on experience to make sure any initials can be backed
with real world knowledge. Any "paper" certificate holders can be filtered
out pretty easily.
If you really want to learn something, I agree with Peter; start tinkering
with some junked machines. Unless your employer is willing to reimburse you
for your course materials and exam fees (probably $100 each). Then I would
build a lab AND take any course/cert track he wants to pay for.

When talking about "Server Licenses" on W2K or WinNT (you know, you get 5 included when you get your OS), do you need to have enough licenses for TOTAL number of users, or CONCURRENT users connected to the Server. Also, do printers need a license?

Troy,
Microsoft requires a licence if you even THINK about connecting to a
server. (Yes printers require a licence).

Here is how I understand CAL licening (if I an wrong I hope someone correts
me)

If you are in per server mode then you only need a licence for each
concurrent user connected (the server will not allow more conections then
you tell it it is licenec for.) If you have 2 servers and each has 50 users
connect to both you need 100 CALs 50 for each server. (Good alternative if
you only have one server)

If you are in per seat mode then you need one CAL for every DEVICE that
connects to ANY server on your network. On CAL allows you to access any
nomber of servers configured in per seat mode) I do not belive you count
users but devices that connect. If you have 50 useres and they all use one
computer to access the server you only need one CAL. But if you have one
user who access from a computer at work, dials in from 2 diffrent computers
at home and connects via a PDA you need 4 CALS for that user to cover his 4
DEVICES. And yes printers are devises.

Sometimes, you can find them at Costco and other "warehouse" type stores
(Sam's Club?) for a considerable discount as well. But Transcenders has an
excellent program, offers on-line training and sample tests which the
official Microsoft manuals do not. There is also MCSE for Dummies which
might not be a bad place to start, their cheat sheets usually have the most
important info on them.

I'm using the Smartforce Certification Program for my MCSD. It consists of
a CD, on-line classroom, and an instructor. The course ran for $1997.00. I
think it was sort of a closeout deal in conjunction with the new MCSD .NET
classes.

I find the coriolis books and the transcender test exams (which I started
with) to be of value, but I would recommend SmartForce's program to anyone.
I got a great sale price, but otherwise it is a bit expensive.

Boot camps run around 6-8,000, and might be worth it in some cases.

Though I somewhat share Wayne's sentiments, and often disagree with the
methodologies of the Big Giant, I would assert that any IT person that is
required to administer Microsoft technologies would benefit from the
appropriate microsoft certification (MCSD for programmers, MCSE for
sysadmins, MCDBA for SQL db admins, etc...)

For those who don't want to touch another MS product, there are also SUN and
CISCO certifications out there that will go a long way in securing a job
administering Non-MS technologies.

In having studied only the material for my first MCSD test, I have learned
alot about programming in windows, and that knowledge applies to 4GL windows
programming as well as Visual Studio. My development productivity has
easily doubled, and I haven't even taken the first test yet.

However, though It is good to have the Microsoft materials as a reference
(esp the MSDN CD's), I would recommend getting your core study materials
from Coriolis, Smartforce, Transcender, or some other reputable third
parties. The more perspectives you get on the material, the better chance
you have of not only passing the test, but retaining the knowledge. If you
haven't already, I would also recommend setting up a test LAN to play with
and test your knowledge.

Totally understand, Wayne! no offense taken. As mentioned, I'm not that
crazy about using MS technology, any more than I am crazy about getting out
of bed and going to work every morning.

I guess its kind of like showing up in school. I didn't agree with all my
teacher's philosophies, and rarely enjoyed going to class, and would have
chosen an alternate state of existence if my whole life was to be spent in a
classroom, but if I was going to compete in the real world, I had to show up
(a good percentage of the time, anyway). In that case, though, I didn't
learn a whole lot that applies to anything I do now (Lord knows my work
ethic wasn't something I learned in school). In the case of MS
certification, and many other certifications, you actually learn stuff that
applies to what you do.

A MCSE or MCSD, according to a study done back in the Dot-Com startup days,
was considered by some companies to be better on an IT resume than a
Bachelor's in Computer Science, of course noting that having both was
better. I don't think it has that kind of weight everywhere (I think I
heard a guy from a local unix-based software company saying a microsoft cert
would worth about as much as having had a job in the Electronics section of
Wal-Mart). Even still, the MS cert is a nice thing to have in this
Windows-Infested universe, if thou art willing to bear the mark of the
Flying Window on thy business card.....

I have to agree with Wayne. I have several certs including some from
Microsoft, what a waste of my time. The material is all theory. I
haven't referred to my MCSE books in the 4 years I have been managing
WIN NT and WIN 2k networks. They don't cover scripting or even basic
network trouble shooting. You'd be hard pressed to find a book that
gives you a good how-to on installing Windows server much less
configuring one. You want a Cert get a CCNA if that doesn't interest
you set up a lab and do some hands on training. You will learn a lot
more. I will admit that my Certs have helped me get jobs, but they
don't help me do my job.

Paul,

A couple of more things, also check the sites like www.cramsession.com and
others, they can give you a good idea of what type of material is covered by
a cert, and how detailed and hands on it gets...

And finally; I wonder what any ECVE (Epicor Certified Vantage Engineer) exam
would look like....

Cheers,

Paul
Thanks for the information!

I have checked into this somewhat and discovered there is a "core" set of
courses/exams and two electives. The one elective I'm interrested in
concerns going from an NT to a 2000 server... or server(s).

On your final note about the ECVE I would assume it would take a lifetime
to achieve that status. I could just see the "Adaptive Questioning Exam"
I'm sure they would code it useing Progress. The program would probably
crash out on installation and then after a re-install and tweaking of the
registry the test would run, but only long enough to give a "prowin32.exe"
error. After setting all kinds of initialization file attributes the exam
would work, but only give you %50 of your score.
