A New Epicor Forum: The Epicorum

I can see both sides to what is being said. For me, I don't use the Yahoo Groups more because they are antiquated. I would much prefer a phBB or vBulleting site. One comment I will make is although YG has worked well in the past, there is the old saying:

"If you are not moving forward you're moving backwards"

I think that applies even more aptly to IT.

1- This kinda seems like spam, it's promoting another site over this one.
2- There doesn't need to be another forum, especially if the main way of
populating it is through moving people from this group to there, all it will
do is dilute the brain power available, and end up duplicating the questions
and answers.

I don't see much value in trying to build that site, especially through any
kind of promotion here. Jason appears to be the only one who has ever posted
there.

An independently run online system is already in existence here, I also
personally think this system is better than what could be created with a
phpBB. I personally have a domain with a blog I am developing and have spent
almost a year designing a bulletin board system that is so awesomely
configured that it would work perfectly to help people find the answers they
need, and post solutions etc etc. There is one major problem with it, and
almost every possible configuration that you can make to those boards, it
doesn't create an easy, fast, and simple way for the people who will provide
the help to vet the questions to see what they can quickly and easily
answer.

That's the main value in this group/email list and why more people take part
in this list than any other group that is out there for Epicor and Vantage,
it's easy for the people giving the help because it's all one list and
people don't need to take any exceptional amount of time out of their day to
go and help someone else.

I think the thing that would be most valuable to us as a community would be
the Wiki that was starting to be developed at one point where we would be
able to take solutions from here, and roll them into a knowledge base that
can be more easily searched, not try to change how that knowledge base is
being created.

I also find some of the "rules" listed over there to be a bit over the top
and chaotic.

Also, I suspect that there is probably a cease and desist on the way from
Epicor within a week(if they are not already printing it right now to be in
the mail by EOD) for trademark and copyright infringement because the site
uses the word Epicor in the name. Ever since the merger they are on hyper
alert to try to squash any and all sites devoted to Epicor and its products
from being able to use the word "epicor" in any way other than a passive
mention in a post, and even then they don't like it. In fact, they don't
even like a screen shot taken and posted online because they consider it a
violation of Trademark and Copyright unless you are specifically licensed by
them to display them.

So be careful, or there is going to be a lot of paperwork and potentially
cost with anything like that.

I'm not sure a forum hosted by someone private is the way to go, but I would really love to see an actual bulletin board or forum software used instead of Yahoo Groups (and email lists in general). So much better for searching and following a thread, etc.

I went to register on this site and it requires your Epicor site ID. Â That is something I'm not comfortable in handing out blindly.

Sorry I said anything, just thought I would share something I came across. I belong to about half a dozen Epicor User Group sites, each have their strong & weak points. Personally I find this yahoo group pretty disorganized making it very difficult to track down resources.
If anyone else cares I also belong to and find the following groups very helpful:
http://erp.ittoolbox.com/groups/technical-functional/epicor-l/
http://community.spiceworks.com/software/epicor-software
There are several Epicor blogs I follow as well, which are very helpful as well, but I'd hate to further dilute the brain trust. ;-)

I personally don't see the problem with having more options and its good to
know they are out there. Why is everyone so prickly when it comes to the
idea of going to a "better system"?

Rick,

Since you started this, would you be willing to further explain why you feel this group is disorganized?

Maybe we can change it up a little to bring more satisfaction to the group as a whole. I'm sure you are not the only one who feels this way.

heh I agree with Joshua if people want to join Epicorum let them (I did)
but I will also still be here. Yahoo Group is fine the way it is not much
you can do to organize it, its worked for years and it will continue to
work for years to come

Joshua,

You, a jerk? Never!
And really I am not being sarcastic….but yes we have to go through this about every six months because I am constantly approving new people who have ideas that should or should not be addressed.

Rick,

Since you started this, would you be willing to further explain why you feel this group is disorganized?

Maybe we can change it up a little to bring more satisfaction to the group as a whole. I'm sure you are not the only one who feels this way.

There are several Epicor blogs I follow as well, which are very helpful as well, but I'd hate to further dilute the brain trust. ;-)

It's unlikely any side forum is going to come up to speed and compete with this since there's so much momentum here, however with that said, I pray for the day that Yahoo decides to terminate these groups and we're all forced to some REAL forum instead of this.

Why.. because I like:

1) Being able to search the history for solutions.
2) Being able to have threaded discussions.
3) Being able to share files easily and within the thread.
4) Have discussions grouped by topics, for searching and finding.
5) Have control over text for embedding code properly and not having it get hosed in replies.
6) Having emailed updates only on those thread I'm potentially interested in.
7) etc, etc, etc.

I was contemplating paying for vBulletin and setting up a site with decent hardware and space behind it for everyone to use, but knew it would sit idle until this list is forced elsewhere.

Here are a few things I think could be improved:
-Files section - Does not have any strong structure it seems like a catch all. And I have not seen a good way to link a file or folder from a post. Often times a user says something like 'I have posted XXX in the Files' then I spend the next hour looking for it. The best forums allow attaching of files to a post.

-Post data tagging/catagories. If posts had the option to have data/meta tags attached to them the search could be improved. Like BAQ, Dashboards, Financial Management, Customization. With over 100,000 posts, search results are difficult to dig through.

-Post ratings/liking. The ability for users to mark a post as helpful or as an answer so when others are searching they can specify that they just want posts with answers or whatever.

Overall Yahoo Groups are pretty antiquated and don't have some great features that other collaboration groups do.

Please note that I do not think that Epicorum.com is better at all. If anything my favorite forum structure is Spiceworks, however there isn't much activity, though it is going up, it has over 3000 followers.

Absolutely agree with everything pbparker says about what sucks about an email list and Yahoo Groups specifically. And I also like Ricks comments.

I'll further add that the "digest" emails I get from Yahoo are terrible for scanning through ... have to wade through a sea of ">>>>>>>". And to make matters worse, the Table of Contents links at the top do not work for me.

The one thing I know an email list has going for it that might be hurt if this was a decent forum software instead: it spams people with new posts. I know that sounds bad, and I know also that you _can_ turn it off (although I wonder if everyone knows that). But it probably does encourage people to actually read others cries for help, and to take pity upon them.

So...

I'll raise my hand so y'all know where to point the pitchforks and torches.

The site was put together back in the fall when there was all that brouhaha. For the record, I have no hidden agenda and no intent to monetize the site, just simply to provide simple and ready access to answers. I'm not an Epicor consultant, and I've actually been touching the software less as I've moved roles in my organization.

I'm happy to discuss the goals and adjust them if necessary. However, I'm not sure where the best place to have that discussion would be.

@pbparker, I wholeheartedly agree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=hHWcoaM_59E#t=31s)

I personally struggle with the need to keep the information behind closed doors, since I use google^H^H^H^H^H^Ha public search engine for most things already. I've heard the suggestion about just sending all the emails to Gmail and searching through there, and that works for the emails since I've joined, but not for historical info, and I'm fairly judicial about what stays in my email.

phpBB was the most straightforward of the free boards, and I would gladly move to vBulletin or something else, but free is helpful to get started. I agree that the Wiki would be great, but just like anything it would require people to tend to the information. I don't think my login works there anymore.

@sgotschall, I have no way of verifying anyone's Epicor IDs, so I'd be happy to remove that requirement. I gladly handed it over when I joined this group and when I signed up for the EUG.

I have no intention to spam or to step on anyone else's "territory", which is why I've made it a point not to promote the site, here or elsewhere. I see great value in the answers and the people that provide those answers. We're all in this together (I hope).

I am a member of several Epicor type groups as well, but I enjoy this one the most. I really appreciate the personality that is here and the willingness to help. I love the sarcasm we occasionally find, it makes me smile. I am also a member of several other Yahoo groups because I show dogs & ferrets as well and they can be tedious to say the least, and so was a bit doubtful when I originally joined, but I have found this list to be the easiest and most productive to follow on all fronts. Kudos.
