Yahoo problems

A couple of other Yahoo groups to which I belong are also being besieged by
spam. Somehow spammers have figured out how to infiltrate the group and send
the junk mail to all the group members. So far Yahoo has done nothing. Or
maybe their attempts to fix the problem is what's slowing everything down so
much.

I received two message this morning (from Mitchell Kirby) that I did not
send. Is anyone else seeing this kind of problem? I will run Norton on my
network and check my email server but I don't want to spend all day on this
if I'm not the culprit.

My apologies in advance if it turns out that my server has been spoofed.

Mitchell,

Most likely your address was spoofed, one of the most trivial
exercises. The quick way to tell is to examine the headers of
the suspect messages. In Outlook, right-click on the messages
in the message window and select Options. The bottom box in
the dialog is called Internet Headers. You'll find your clues
there. Next most likely cause is an email virus on your
machine.

have fun,
john

Mitchell, we have had a few similar problems here, receiving e-mail from
what appears to be my exchange server even though the messages were never
sent from the individual (i.e. bobg@...) I don't know how it
happens. I have scanned for viruses and have found nothing.

They're called "headers". Every message has them. Most email clients
hide them.

"techno-looking". That's a comforting phrase coming from a Vantage

Possible you are being spammed, your mail server is acting as an open relay,
or you have a virus (maybe Klez). I would defiantly get to the bottom of the
problem.

Rick,

Your client is not hiding the headers. Something in the header is
making the client think that it is part of the message body. Sometimes
headers will get munged when posted, in transit or when received.
Since one other person here said the same thing, I'd have to guess
that Yahoo has barfed a couple of headers.

have fun,
john

Yahoo is barfing on a lot of things. Delivery times are very long (1h20m +,
if at all) and often in mixed up order (replies received long before the
original post). Is anyone NOT seeing this behavior? Perhaps their email
server(s) have some problems.

Spoofing your computer to use it as a relay would be difficult since you are
using a dialup account. A virus that mailed itself to everybody in your
address book is way too easy to catch if you don't take precautions.

Yeah, quite a bit lately. Almost looks like their mail goes out
alphabetically by address or domain, rather than FIFO ! I use several
accounts with Yahoo groups. This one has been receiving things with large
delays and is W...@X... Another account lower in the alphabet gets things
quickly.

May have something to do with the size of the list, too. This is the only
BIG one I'm on.

Yahoo appears to be really screwed up. I get responses to a posting before
the original posting. Additional, I do not believe I am getting all the
messages because I read message on topics I have never received.

I thought the capacity of the Vantage group may have been used up but this
was not the case when I checked.
