XL Connect 7 - Rant

Came across a neat feature of XL Connect 7 today. The XL Connect 7 license is registered by a combination of the user and computer, that means that if the same user install XL Connect in different computers, it will consume and additional seat.

If a user receives a new computer and the XL Connect license isn’t deactivated on the old computer then the user will consume two licenses. Even better, at this point if you don’t have the old computer anymore or it has been re-imaged there is no way to deactivate the “old” license unless you contact support to do so.

Furthermore, if you have support deactivate the incorrect license, they then have to contact the developer of XL Connect to run a separate procedure to release the user/device ID until that combination can be used with a license again.

This is unacceptable on so many levels, furthering my hate for XL Connect.

Yes, hear hear. I ran into this as well and it was beyond frustrating to deal with.

What I didn’t mention that…Went through that process myself, when IT gave our accountant a new computer and blew it away before deactivating the license… Funnily the license shows as the users domain/user id not the machine, just to add to the confusion.

So I de-registered the users new license.Got epicor send me a list of all our licenses (which showed both and got them to remove all for that user. Then registered it again… Crisis averted, but I’m with you what a headache!

On another note I have never managed to get the ability to swap from environment to environment, even though, using the connection wizard you can add different connections, it always uses the appears to use th default profile.

We run Excel on Citrix which means a User throughout the day can hit any of 40 different Terminal Servers… Sounds like it will consume 40 licenses per user? Let alone 30 users * 40 possibilities.
