What does WIP mean? In what circumstances the part lot will be captured as WIP?
What is the impact if the part is parked at WIP?
WIP is when a part is on a JOB. If you have the advanced material management (or maybe Advanced Production?) module, then you can issue material to a job, and it will show as still being in WIP until the operation where the part is consumed has been completed.
Example. You have a job that has 3 operations: (10, 20 and 30). you have a part 1032knut that is related to operation 20. When you start the job, you issue the 1032knut to the job. It will show in WIP until you complete operation 20, at which point, it will no longer show in wip.
Tim,
If the part no longer shows in WIP where does it go? For us my understanding is we issue the materials to the job, it shows in WIP. Complete the operations, material is still in WIP. Once we transact the job to a sales order stock etc it moves out of WIP.
well… if I issue a 1 sheet of plywood to a job, and then at operation 10, I cut up the sheet into smaller shapes, I no longer have a sheet of plywood. so it “goes” into the job. the job owns it. The cost of the material has been consumed by the job. The JOB is in WIP, and the job can be tracked, but the material is no longer available because it is consumed.
I know that there are many variations on this, Yes, in some cases, you can disassemble a job to get back at the materials, but the way that the software is designed, it no longer tracks the individual component locations once they have been consumed. They are considered part of the assembly.
Also, if you look at the assembly that is being made on the job, you will see that it DOES have a WIP location.
