Windows 2000 Question

Another place to look is in device manager in the system icon of the control
pannel. Look at the device for your network card, under Properties, under
the ADVANCED tab look for POWER MANAGEMENT. Herr Gates has decided that the
appropriate default is to power off your network card to save power. I've
had to do this on several machines that want to "disconnect" after a while.

Subject: [Vantage] Windows 2000 Question

I have a new Windows 2000 Professional workstation that Vantage likes to
"lock up" on. It's a DELL Precision P4. I have noticed that the drive
mapped to the Vantage folder has a red X on it after data collection is
idle
for a while, much like a disconnected drive, but when you click it the
mapped drive popps right up like normal.

I think I remember someone saying that their mapped drives were
disconnecting after a "time out" setting on Windows 2000. Does anyone
know
if this is a concern with Windows 2000 Pro. I looked all throught the
network setup and I don't see a place that tells it to disconnect network
connections after a certain length of time.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yahoo was gracious enough to send an email this morning announcing their
"new"
privacy policy. I was sickened by the way the information clouded the
truth.
I signed on again and sent them an email response to relay my
dissatisfaction with
the manner in which they conducted their campaign. I don't know if it did
any good,
but I thought a little Spam back at them was personally rewarding.

I haven't gotten any announcements from them yet. But I also don't have an
@yahoo address, since my account was migrated over from OneList.com. Are
they only spamming their own mailboxes? (I hope!)

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track you around the
net & see what you are doing. ...like cookies......

Take a look at http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/pixels/details.html
Somewhere about halfway down the page, there is a link that lets you
opt-out of their electronic snooping.

Also note that when you opt out, a window opens that says you have
successfully opted out, but also says that if you want to cancel opt out to
press the small window below. DON'T click the small window thinking that it
is the final opt out.

Mike,

I didn't see any responses to this post ... so here goes ...

I presume you don't want to run a .CMD or .BAT to do this, so one way is to
use a Script. I have been looking for an excuse to read about Windows
Script. Turns out it can run a number of different script types (eg
VBScript, Java Script), we have all probably seen the .vbs extension that we
associate with viruses (eg HotChick.jpg.vbs). I had to allow Norton to run
my test script !

After a bit of looking around for functions and methods on
msdn.microsoft.com, I believe something like the following will do what you
are looking for :-

----- Put these in a .vbs file and run -----
Const ForReading = 1, ForWriting = 2

Dim fso, f1, f2, f3, f4
Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set f1 = fso.GetFolder("h:\temp")
Set f4 = fso.OpenTextFile("h:\text.txt", ForWriting, True)
Set f3 = f1.Files
For Each f2 in f3
If f2.type = "Text Document" Then
WScript.Echo f2.name
f4.WriteLine f2.name
End If
Next
----- End of Text file -----

There are lots of other useful things you can do as well, like
creating/modifying Active Directory object, Registry keys, creating
printers.

Don't ask me questions though, I know nothing more than I have learnt in the
past hour. It looks like the sort of topic that you need a week and a good
book to become familiar with. I'm sure Thad could do much better with his
programming background.

Regards
Michael

I keep my temporary space to a minimum size, reject cookies and set history
to zero days. Puts a little more load on the line to reload every page but
the line is fast and it keeps things cleaner. Threre are also cheap
(freeware?) "cleaning" utilities. I also have scripts set to prompt (and
usually say no) this prevents tracking scripts for recording I was there.
And I use a Pop-Up Stopper to avoid scripts in the pop-up sites that would
track me or try to leave cookies. Funny thing is I just installed web
tracking scripts in our web site only to figure out which search enigne
people come from.

I have a question:

Can I delete selected files in the "Windows\Temporary Internet Files" directory? Some of the sites I use I'd like it to remember things. But others I'd like gone forever (of course not "celebrity photos, etc. - going to those sites would never have happened)

Todd,

My 2 cents.....
I would leave the relay turned off.

We had some national level ISP's blocking our mail server because the relay was on.
This became really annoying when some of our customers were initiating emails from their home accounts and we were unable to directly respond from our own domain.
(including the chorus of "I can't send email to my home email account!)
It took about 30 seconds to turn the relay off, plus a month of constant emails to get off the various banned lists.
Most ISP's are very willing to re-open their servers once the relay is closed. (They do check)

In the end.....
I had more complaints from users whose mail wasn't delivered, than user complaints about spam.

As for spam. We internally block several domains who were our worst offenders.
It really cut down on the daily junk.

Rick,

Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for but, try looking at PC Magazine's Cookie Cop 2.
It is free and....
It blocks cookies from sites you select. (very easy to do in it's event log)
It blocks popup windows if you wish
It will block sites if you wish
It can block page referrals
It's help system is very good and also explains why or why not you may want to block things.

other stuff
It only runs from individual machines

My favorite is The Proxomitron http://www.flaaten.dk/prox/ It's a proxy
server that runs on your PC and can be configured to re-write the HTML and
script code in web pages on the fly. You can define rules to match the
code doing the annoying stuff, and strip it out. It comes with several
config files you can use as-is, if you don't want to program your
own. Take a look under the "features" section of the URL above.

I use this utility. It is one of the best available and extremely easy to
use. Plus, you can't beat the price. It can be downloaded at

Before we had our relay turned off, it turned out that there were around
10000 spam messages, being routed for delivery through OUR mail server, and
I couldn't even send an e-mail to my personal account mail server on our own
ISP. I second the motion that you leave it turned off.

Todd,

My 2 cents.....
I would leave the relay turned off.

We had some national level ISP's blocking our mail server because the relay
was on.
This became really annoying when some of our customers were initiating
emails from their home accounts and we were unable to directly respond from
our own domain.
(including the chorus of "I can't send email to my home email account!)
It took about 30 seconds to turn the relay off, plus a month of constant
emails to get off the various banned lists.
Most ISP's are very willing to re-open their servers once the relay is
closed. (They do check)

In the end.....
I had more complaints from users whose mail wasn't delivered, than user
complaints about spam.

As for spam. We internally block several domains who were our worst
offenders.
It really cut down on the daily junk.

Mail Washer is really nice with one little exception. I have confirmed
that
it won't "bounce" a message back to the sender as undeliverable if you
have
SMTP relay turned off. I turned it off in Exchange to prevent our server
from being co-opted as a relay point by spammers. Now I have to consider
turning it back on so I can make spammers think the address is invalid.
Tough choice.

For those who might be interested, here's the scoop on our experience with
the spam epidemic:

1. Personal Identification and Eradication

There is a handy little freeware application called MailWasher that allows
you to review your email, interact with your ISP and block/blacklist
incoming spam before it hits your system. Please see the following for
details:

http://www.mailwasher.net/ <http://www.mailwasher.net/>

As far as we are able to determine, this application will effectively
eradicate your incoming spam as long as you are directly connected to your
ISP and they subscribe to the update/blacklist protocols. If you are
using
an internal server for relaying your internet email, the effectiveness on
the tool is still in question.

2. Internet Organizations

With all deference to those who have posted here before, there are online
organizations that you can configure your internal server to reference for
likely spam activities. Please see the following

http://www.ORDB.Org <http://www.ORDB.Org>

http://www.spamcop.org <http://www.spamcop.org>

3. The Thrill of The Chase

If you have the time and inclination, check out eMailTrackerPro and
VisualRoute from VisualWare. With these two tools, you can have a
fighting
chance of determining the location of the source of your unwanted nuisance
traffic.

http://www.visualware.com <http://www.visualware.com>

With this three pronged approach and waaaayyyy too much time on your
hands,
you can effectively eliminate your spam worries.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

I have a new Windows 2000 Professional workstation that Vantage likes to
"lock up" on. It's a DELL Precision P4. I have noticed that the drive
mapped to the Vantage folder has a red X on it after data collection is idle
for a while, much like a disconnected drive, but when you click it the
mapped drive popps right up like normal.

I think I remember someone saying that their mapped drives were
disconnecting after a "time out" setting on Windows 2000. Does anyone know
if this is a concern with Windows 2000 Pro. I looked all throught the
network setup and I don't see a place that tells it to disconnect network
connections after a certain length of time.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks
