W98 SE Workstations (another slow problem)

In our case, reducing the speed of the network connection reduced vantage
start time from 5 minutes to 15 seconds. However, a dir /s of the vantage
server that took 15 seconds at a 100mbps connection, now took 20 seconds
at
a 10mbps connection.

Full duplex has been maintained on all our workstations.

Improvement wasn't so much speed, as it was just a reliable connection.
At
Autosense or 100/full, workstations would occasionally lose the connection
to the server, and users would constantly complain about being unable to
run
vantage, as the "file not found" error would pop up.

Now that my W2000 Server is running the way it's supposed to, I have another
'slow' problem to fix. I have 3 identical W98 workstations: one opens and
runs Vantage very quickly, while the other two have problems opening certain
windows. For example: after starting a Vantage session, all workstations
bring up the splash screen, and logon screen in about the same time, but 2
of the three take 30+ seconds to then display the Vantage Menu while the one
takes about 7 seconds. Another example: Job Scheduling - after clicking the
'Schedule' button, one workstation displays the 'Scheduling' window in about
4 seconds, while the other 2 take about 40 seconds.

I've compared environment variables, running processes, loaded drivers, bios
version, everything I can think of and can find no difference among the
three workstations. As I said, they are identical - same everything as far
as hardware, and drivers.

Any ideas??

Thanks

I had the same problem and it turned out to be all the old entries that
vantage had left in the registry. There were entries from several versions
back and several servers back. I used the unregocx program that comes with
vantage to remove all the old items and then reinstalled the client.

Clean out the Vantage work folders on the workstations while not running
Vantage. Just yesterday, I found a workstation gummed up with over 1Gb of
stuff in the Vantage work folder ( hundreds of 4-5Mb .srt files ). You may
also need to defrag the harddrives of the workstations in question.

Hello Jim,
Are you saying that In the Vntgwork folder on the clients C: drive the .srt files can be deleted? Are these sort fiIes? I periodically delete export files from this folder, but didn't really know for sure just what files/extensions could be deleted. Should this be done when not in vantage? Are there other files in this folder that can be periodically deleted? I mainly write/maintain reports and handle data exports and am trying to handle some items that our former IS manager took care of. Any help will be appreciated.

I agree, I think their like temporary internet files. They are created for
temporary use then left or written over with future use.

I've already run the unregocx, emptied the vantage work folder, and
defragged the drives, with no help.

Any other ideas?

Thanks
Dennis,

As far as I can determine, you can delete all the files in your vntgwork
folder periodically. Most of the time the files take up a minimal amount of
space <10Mb. Yes, this should be done when not in Vantage since Progress
holds several files open and can't be deleted while running Vantage.

Troy,

The one exception would be your schema cache file if you are storing it
locally for faster startup times.

windows. For example: after starting a Vantage session, all
workstations
bring up the splash screen, and logon screen in about the same time,
but 2
of the three take 30+ seconds to then display the Vantage Menu while
the
one
takes about 7 seconds. Another example: Job Scheduling - after
clicking
the
'Schedule' button, one workstation displays the 'Scheduling' window in
about
4 seconds, while the other 2 take about 40 seconds.

I've compared environment variables, running processes, loaded
drivers,
bios
version, everything I can think of and can find no difference among
the
three workstations. As I said, they are identical - same everything
as
far
as hardware, and drivers.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Thanks to all for the response, I Thought this folder held the client workstation files or something needed for the workstation since it is specified when installing a client. I will try deleting these files sometime and see if it helps speed up exports.

Dennis,

As far as I can determine, you can delete all the files in your vntgwork
folder periodically. Most of the time the files take up a minimal amount of
space <10Mb. Yes, this should be done when not in Vantage since Progress
holds several files open and can't be deleted while running Vantage.

Hello Jim,
Are you saying that In the Vntgwork folder on the clients C: drive the
.srt files can be deleted? Are these sort fiIes? I periodically delete
export files from this folder, but didn't really know for sure just what
files/extensions could be deleted. Should this be done when not in vantage?
Are there other files in this folder that can be periodically deleted? I
mainly write/maintain reports and handle data exports and am trying to
handle some items that our former IS manager took care of. Any help will be
appreciated.

Clean out the Vantage work folders on the workstations while not running
Vantage. Just yesterday, I found a workstation gummed up with over 1Gb
of
stuff in the Vantage work folder ( hundreds of 4-5Mb .srt files ). You
may
also need to defrag the harddrives of the workstations in question.

Experimenting with network connection settings on the workstation level has
proven sucessful when we've had 98se slowdown problems. For two of our
laptops, the remedy was to change the NIC cards connection speed to 10mbps
full duplex instead of 100mbps. I've also heard that changing to half
duplex has helped some people as well.

Been there and done that: NIC's are set at 10 half mode. - Had to do that
to improve normal communications with the server.

Thanks

Norm,

How much improvement in performance did you see by switching to 10Mb half
duplex?

Improvement wasn't so much speed, as it was just a reliable connection. At
Autosense or 100/full, workstations would occasionally lose the connection
to the server, and users would constantly complain about being unable to run
vantage, as the "file not found" error would pop up.

Norm Watkins
In our case, reducing the speed of the network connection reduced vantage
start time from 5 minutes to 15 seconds. However, a dir /s of the vantage
server that took 15 seconds at a 100mbps connection, now took 20 seconds at
a 10mbps connection.

Full duplex has been maintained on all our workstations.

Hello group, I have come into this string a little late. Can someone tell
me more about the unregocx program. Where can I find it? Is it version
specific, is there one for each version of vantage I have installed(4.0,
5.0, 5.1)? Should I run this on every client?
Thanks

I had the same problem and it turned out to be all the old entries that
vantage had left in the registry. There were entries from several versions
back and several servers back. I used the unregocx program that comes with
vantage to remove all the old items and then reinstalled the client.
