VPN office to office

VNC is a great option. www.tightvnc.com I use this extensively at work.
One of the things that you might want to do is set up a linux box on both
ends with ssh running on the machine. That way you can securely connect to
your computer at work. I use a combination of cigwin on the windows machine
and sshd on the linux box. You can read more about this setup here:

http://www.uk.research.att.com/archive/vnc/sshvnc.html

Good luck!

Michael

I use WinVNC for this exact reason. I have T1 at work and cable at home.
With the WinVNC client on both ends I can log into either machine from the
other. The only trick is with my cable, I need to make sure I know my
current IP at home to connect to. With this you select a port to connect
through and a password. Using the port and instance (winvnc.exe) I set a
rule in the firewall to allow traffic for this program. Works great for
work that I did at home and left there, or vice versa.

I've got a new one for me.

Location # 1 - Owner's home with Cable Internet link using Linksys
router/switch/firewall

Location # 2 - Business using DSL Internet link using Linksys
router/switch/firewall

Goal: Use PcAnywhere or a clone to link up PC at home to PC in the office
for remote control.

Does anyone know how to do this ?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

If you are going to use PC Anywhere, you need to open up tcp port 5631 and udp port 5632 on your firewalls…then have either an address or port translation to the internal ip address of both computers. Then just connect using the public ipaddresses….

One question to start....do both services have static IP's or are they dynamicaly assigned by the ISP? Dynamic IP might make this extra tricky.

If you have Dynamic IPs, try use www.no-ip.com service as a redirect. They
have a utility that will update your setup/redirect automatically when your
IP changes. Works great and its free.

If you want the zero configuration, no hassle answer you can always use
GoToMyPC.com. There is a monthly fee but it is inexpensive and completely
hassle free.

Also with WinVNC you can enable the java viewer on the server and then you
can connect to your pc from any java supported browser. Don't even need
vncviewer.exe (even though its only a 228K file) on the clients pc.
