VPN and remote users

You need a "client access license" for each machine accessing the terminal
server. Win2K and up already include these licenses. Win98 and down do not
and you will have to purchase them.

The company and potential remote users both have DSL connections finally.
We both have identical firewalls that support VPN. Once I finish setting up
the VPN connection what is the next step in running Vantage from the remote
client? Could some one contact me off list who has done this?

I, for one, would be interested in hearing this "on-list". Sharing various
experiences (success or failures) might generate some fresh ideas. Thanks.

We have a single remote user with DSL. He connects directly to the Exchange
server and uses PC Anywhere for Vantage. I couldn't justify the cost of
TS/Citrix for a single user vs. a dedicated machine on the inside and a
license of PCA.

Rick
Although this solution will work, I believe that this will be too slow
actually be a viable solution. Since VPN is in essence just a remote
connection to your internal network through a MUCH smaller pipeline, it will
obviously be much slower than actually being on the network. A case in
point, I believe that in order to load Vantage to the initial sign-on screen
requires more than 6 MB of data to be downloaded to the client. How long
will this take over your DSL connection?

It MAY (although I have not yet seen it in practice by anyone) be somewhat
workable if you locate all the Vantage and Progress files on the remote
workstation, and use the VPN only for access to the database.

Personally, I would use a remote access solution such as PC Anywhere or
Terminal Services as relatively cheap, fast remote access solutions for
Vantage.

I've never tried it but once you have the VPN established and connected, all
you should have to do is map a drive to your Vantage folder and install a
standalone Vantage client installation. Tech support has a document on
standalone clients.

What is involved in using Terminal Services? I tried software similar to PC
Anywhere last year on a dial-up connection and it was very slow. I didn't
think to try it again with the DSL.

Well, basically you purchase MS Terminal server licenses (not that
expensive) and install these licenses on a Win2K server. Then you install
the client software on the remote location and connect to the Win2K server
with the TS licenses. And, voila, you are tied into your network, but the
session is running on the server, and your workstation is only getting
screen shots which dramatically reduces the bandwidth required for the
remote machine, and hence dramatically speeds up the remote session.

It's pretty easy to do. One thing to keep in mind: Install each program
through /Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Add New Programs on the Terminal
Server so that the client can see the application.

Also, I have not been able to install Norton AV Corp. Edition 7.6 through
the server. It just won't seem to "take". If anyone has any suggestions...

TIA

I went to add terminal services to my Win2000 server. It has an admin mode
or a user/application mode. The user mode lets users run multiple
applications. This seems to be what I need for remote access. It warns me
to add terminal services licenses within 90 days. What are these? Are they
different for Win98 vs. Win2000? Do I add them on the client or the host?
CDW seems to have several different versions of Terminal Server licenses and

If you have a CDW account rep I'd call them. Ours has been extremely
helpful with all MS license issues and they have experts on staff if the rep
gets stumped. Plus if they happen to mess up you can blame it on them.
