Vantage Upgrade question

Shutting down admin service does not shut down the database, only the
ability to shut down the database(ie you'll get an error if you try to
connect in Progress Explorer). I believe you can safely shutdown the admin
service with the database still running(I've done it in 5.0 but not in 4.0).
You can try it with the 9.0 service running, the worst that will happen is
that you'll get a database in multi-user mode error or some other file
access error in which case you will have to stop the service.

OK, I am with you so far. I am going to use our "COPYLIVE" database and it
will not be a problem to stop. However, if I stop the admin services for
9.0b on the live server will that take Vantage down for the users? Or do I
only have to stop the 9.1 admin services? If so that is ok.
Sorry for all the silly questions, but I am very new to this.

You will have to shut down 4.0 and 5.0 databases, and stop the admin
services. On the 5.0 machine go to epic50\progress\bin. Type procopy
x:\4.0dblocation\vantage x:\5.0dblocation\vantage

Hi Troy,
Thanks to you and all others here and offline that responded. I have been
able to get the Training Data up and going fine.
Now I am considering converting our backup database (4.0.811) to 5.0 and
eventually 5.1. I have never done this so I am quite unsure of what to do.
5.0 is not on our live 4.0 server. Do I use procopy to move the database? I
take it I cannot just copy and paste to move the files and then do the
schema changes.

Jim,
In answer to your questions...

1) Can we go straight to 5.1 or do we need to apply the latest patches to
4.00 then likewise 5.00 before going to 5.1?

--Try it and see on a test case, but I don't believe you can.

2) I have done a test installation of 5.0 and it is working, however ...

--5.0 should bring over all your usernames, etc when you do your schema
changes, etc. on the database. Are you sure you're not looking at the sample
database that comes with Vantage? Did you do all the schema changes & data
conversions?
Alternately, perhaps you didn't enter all the Vantage License codes for the
various modules when you installed Vantage 5.0.

We are gearing up for the change as well Jim. We are currently running 4.0
and we have been told that we switch from 4.0 right to 5.1. In fact we were
under the impression that with some running 5.0, that it might be preferred
to skip 5.0 and go right to 5.1. That is the direction we are heading, hope
to be there within the next month and a half. Good luck. We were told no
patches or minor updating was needed. Should load right up with no
problems.

You can install 5.1 by itself. You cannot use a 4.0 database however so you
will need to run 5.0 schema and DB conversions before you can run the 5.1
schema and conversion(It will let you run the schema changes directly from 4
to 5.1, but you will get CRC errors when running the DB conversions). I
would suggest leaving 5.0 on your test DB to convert your DB when you do the
real upgrade. You can leave 5.0 and 5.1 on the same test system because
they use different folders(epic50 and epic51).

3 ways to get the Database somewhere to convert it.

1. Use ProRest to restore a backup from the previous version. Benefit: you can get the database moved without shutting down you live database.
2. Use Procopy (using the NEWER versions path for progress commands). Cons: have to shut down live database first. Benefit: you don't have to "prostrct repair" on the .st file.
3. You can cut and past files to another directory, however... you then have to edit the vantage.st file to reflect the new database path, then do a "prostrct repair vantage" command to reset the pointers in the .st file to the new location.

Hi Troy,
Thanks to you and all others here and offline that responded. I have been
able to get the Training Data up and going fine.

We too are considering going from 4.00.811 to 5.1 and I have and will have
some questions, for I am somewhat new to Vantage.

1) Can we go straight to 5.1 or do we need to apply the latest patches to
4.00 then likewise 5.00 before going to 5.1?
2) I have done a test installation of 5.0 and it is working, however It
acts
as if I don't have access to everything. Sales,Materials, and Financial
Management groups will not let me access any sub-groups. I am signed in as
manager with manager rights. What is the default login for when you first
install Vantage? I am only able to login with the manager training login.

Thanks for any help offered.
