Vantage travelers crashing while printing

Diane,

Installing W2K SP2 seems to have done it. Still early in the game, but this
is the first he's been able to print travelers, without some kind of crash,
in a month. If it turns out otherwise, I'll let you know. Thanks to
everbody for the help. Thanks Lydia for the answer. -Gary

Well darn it! We have days where our work stations hang two or three
times - so frustrating! And like yours, random untraceable
occurences...please let me know if the SP fixes your problem.

Gary,

Did you do any modifications to the traveler with Crystal Reports? We
have
the same problem printing forms that have been modified with Crystal
Reports - and that is most of them! I would be very interested to know if
SP2 fixes your problem.

Wayne, Thad, Lydia & Jim,

The ws prints direct to the print server. But The same server is being
used
for a wide carriage printer used by engineering running Mechanical
Desktop
60 without any problems. And other people do not have this problem when
doing the same kind of printing.

They all have the same OS - W2K with no service pack (I'm downloading it
right now) - all new installations. All other printing is fine. Just
the
travelers, and just on this one ws. And it happens randomly - different
number of travelers before failing.

I'll try Lydia's suggestion first - I should have SP2 on these ws's
anyway.
You know you get so caught up in the myriad of problems that you have to
deal with on a daily basis in IT, that you forget about something as
basic
as loading OS service packs.

Thanks everybody. I'll let you know how it goes.

Does the PC send jobs directly to the printer, or is there a server (NT
/
Unix) that spools the jobs? While most print servers (Jet Direct / Axis

Maybe somebody has had this problem. It's got me stumped.

Using Vantage 4.0, our Operations Manager prints travelers lickety split one
after the other through the network to a HP1100 on a HP 500X print server.
The printjobs fail after a random number of travelers (different every
time). Other people print the same thing fine. No commonality on jobs or
parts. I gave him a completely rebuilt workstation today. Same thing the
first batch of travelers he tried.

Could it be the buffer in the print server not playing nice with Vantage?
Or the driver?? I don't get it. Any suggestions?

We've had problem in 3.0. Seems to have gone away since we've upgraded to
2K pro on the workstations.

>Operations Manager prints travelers lickety split one after the other...

If travelers are printed too fast in sequence, vantage might try to
overwrite the traveler dbf's while a previous instance of the crystal print
engine is still accessing them. I've had instances in writing exports where
even though I close the output, it seems progress hangs on to the file a
little longer than expected.

Just a thought....

See if the problem is mitigated by making him wait until one job is 100% in
the que before starting the next one. Also try to recreate the problem by
printing five of the largest jobs as fast in sequence as possible and see if
that recreates the error.

Gary:

What OS is the workstation running? I had a similar problem with a group of
workstations that were all w2K printing to a network printer (through HP Jet
Direct). It would hang up halfway through a traveler and that was the end.
Moved the W2K stations to Service Pack 2 (takes only a few minutes), and
poof! They all print fine to the network printer now. BUT - the one W98
system still attached to that printer hangs now. Sometimes. I changed no
drivers, no setups to printers, nothing. Go figure.

/
whatever) have a direct-from-the-pc mode, they're often flaky running
that
way.
