Vantage Server ReBoot

Thanks for the info.... I will check it out!
Hi Group,

Do you all reboot your vantage server on a regular basis? Advice
we've gotten from Epicor tells us we should be rebooting at regular
intervals to 'clean up' all the junk out in memory.
We would like to do reboots over the weekend UNATTENDED. Is this
possible and how are you all doing this? You have to first stop the
database and then do the reboot. Anyone know how to do this
unattended??
Thanks for the help.
Joey
Command line to stop database

Set dlc=v:\Progress
call v:\progress\bin\dbman -stop mfgsys61

Replace V with your drive letter and mfgsys61 with your database name

If you have 2003 server you can reboot from the commandline. If you have another server then there are several free reboot untilities out there. I think one is located in the Admin folder on the server disk. If you can't find it let me know and I will email it to you.
Thanks
Jeremy

I never reboot my server (NT4sp6), unless I am installing something that
needs a reboot. I don't think I have ever heard of needing to reboot
regularly.

I bet you would see a remarkable improvement in performance if you rebooted
occasionally, after all we are talking Windows.

What platform are you running on ? There are various utilities that are free that can handle the scheduling and restart of your servers.

We currently do not reboot unless "something weird" happens or regular system maintenance requires the servers be shutdown. We have gone over a year in one stretch. However, if your server is "short" on ram and "high" on transactions then I could see things getting fragmented in memory causing performance issues.
Check your memory usage in task manager. Are you hitting your virtual memory or are you running totally within true RAM? If operating all in RAM how much of a cushion do you have before hitting virtual ram? And lastly - how big is your database.

NT4SP6A - V4.0 - I reboot that server about every 2-3 months on average and
have never seen any change in performance due to rebooting.

Before you go out of your way trying to figure this out you might want to
run some tests first to prove the point.

I reboot ours when I make a change that requires it. Generally 2 or 3

Bruce,

Did you try using instsrv.exe and srvany.exe utilities off the NT Resource Kit? Works for 2000 also.

I had bad luck with AT running certain batch files - never seemed to find a logical pattern as to which ones would work and not work.
Finally I found a freebie scheduling utility that seemed to do the trick called : JIT Scheduler 4. It was written by a Russian programmer, but I just checked the website link and it appears he has gone off the air. I still have it if you need it.

Joey,

I used to schedule an unattended reboot of all of my servers over the
weekend.
Little by little I stopped this practice.

I still think it's a good idea to reboot occasionally, just not every
week.
I've settled on every two months.
I think there are zombies and allocated memory you just have to clean
out once and a while.

I just created a .bat file and then added it to the AT scheduler.
You should be able to add a line to the .bat to stop the db and wait a
few seconds before the reboot.
The only problem I ever had was some apps that could not be set up to
start as a service.
I never found a way to avoid being onsite to start those up.

Good luck,
Bruce

Another thought if you feel you may be having performance
issues....have you tried a good 3rd party defrag utility
like the one from O&O Software? The have a server version as
well as client version. I really like this one.
