You need to contact Tech Support to get the correct way to backup the
database. Previous versions have a utility that copies the running database
so you can backup the copy. Trying to backup/copy the running database any
other way is not a good idea. Tech Support has white papers on how to do it
properly.
I don't know how version 8 handles this so I am not going to get into
details on version 6.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage server backup
Hello all,
We are a new Vantage customer configuring a Windows2003 server to run
Vantage v8.0 on the Progress database. This is our first Windows based
server.
We are considering purchasing EMC's Retrospect
(http://www.dantz.com/en/products/business.dtml) to backup 2 Windows servers
and important client workstations to an LTO tape drive. It would be great
to know if anyone has used Retrospect to backup Vantage and if so did you
have any issues?
In a more general sense, I was wondering what hardware, software and
processes everyone is using to backup their Vantage servers that use the
Progress DB on a Windows OS. I'm especially interested in any "gotcha's"
for getting a good backup of Vantage. Like does the database need to be
shutdown and users logged off to get a reliable backup?
Thank you,
Dan Snyder
