Vantage Backups, After Image, Open Edge Replication

Brian,

You are correct in summary. OpenEdge Replication uses AI to perform a "Real-time" replication of your database to a different location, preferably a different physical server, and ideally a different physical location. Depending on your tolerance for loss (number of minutes, or hours) you can achieve nearly the same thing without the Replication product by frequently swapping your AI files transferring them, and then rolling them into a separate DB. This is a manual process normally handled by automated scripts. The replication product takes it to the ultimate level in that every time a block is written to the AI file - it is immediately transferred to the second DB. Meaning that you can't lose even one committed transaction.

You are also correct that replication plus allows the separate DB to perform as a reporting DB (depending on what type of reports and how they are run), by allowing DB connections to the replicated DB in a read-only mode.

I can report that the Replication product works very well, and if combined with clustering you can create a very fault tolerant system.

We are doing that, but that is only going to save ALL of your data if the server dies right after the backup is made. I'm looking for more of an up to the minute real time back up solution to enhance our disaster recovery plan.

I'm not real familiar with them, but according to my CAM, Progress has a couple of options.

From what I understand After Image is more of a technique, it doesn't require an additional purchase of software. The AI files log the transactions that are written to the DB and you can somehow use that to recover the lost transactions between your last back up and the crash.

From what I understand, The Open Edge Replication solution is software that Epicor sells to make a real time copy of your DB on a different server. There is a version, Open Edge Replication Plus that will allow you to use that DB to be the one that is used for reporting, taking load off the production server.

I'd like to hear more about either option from people who are using them, or at least more familiar with them than I am.

Thanks,

Brian

What are the preferred methods for backing up the Vantage Database with 8.x and higher?

Is anyone using After Imaging. If so, please comment about how it is for set up and if you've had to use it, how well did it work.

Is anyone using Open Edge Replication. If so, please comment about how it is for set up and if you've had to use it, how well did it work.

Thanks,

Brian Stenglein
Depends on if you use Progress or SQL version. Try these.

I find it very easy to use the probkup utility to backup the database live and then backup the backup file to tape.
