Vantage 8 System Requirements

I'm not sure the distinction is important. Epicor chose it -- Epicor
implemented it.

We're still concerned about form loading at Electroimpact. The Form Cache is
useless for most of our users because they don't stay in Vantage all day.
Now if each form could be a dynamic link routine a Terminal Server could
store in memory for the first user and subsequent users take advantage of,
that would be useful.

For those already running/installing Vantage 8.
What are your opinions on the system requirements 2.4 GHz and 768 MB - 1
GB of RAM?
Is this much necessary?
How are machines with 512 MB RAM working out?
Machines with slower processors?
We are prepping to make the jump and want some real world opinion.

Regards
Rich
Rich, The issues is not totally with the hardware.

I purchased a server and client to test vantage 8.
PowerEdge, 2.4ghz Xeon, 4gb RAM, Raid 1, 4-74gb Drives, Perc4/Di controller.
OptiPlex GX280, 3.2ghz, 1gb RAM.
I run GB Ethernet on client and server.

Adding 4 releases to an order for 50,000 each 8/15, 9/15, 10/15, 11/15.

Vantage 6.1 I can do this in 55 seconds.
Vantage 8.0 My best time is 3 Minutes and 50 Seconds.

This is after I load the form and cache to memory and also have loaded the
sales order
So I'm just key punching and hitting tab or enter.

Is my system hosed, or can others enter transactions faster than this in
8.0?
Please respond.

Patrick,

How big is your database and did you size the memory blocks in the Progress
config to use as much of your ram as possible ? Also, is your server a
multi-processor server (not the hyper-threading fake dual cpu's) ? If yes,
adjust your spin locks accordingly. Is a single server also running the
6.1 or is that a different box ?

Personally, I think v8 sounds like the Neanderthal of Vantage. They should
have pushed ALL processing back to the server and all clients should be web
based. I mean - doesn't it seem the system requirements for v8 are little
out of whack ? They sure do to me.

Just my 0010 bits,

Charles

I think the point he is trying to make is the usability of version 8 is far more cumbersome than 6.1. I agree. Take for instance finding a customer. In 6.1, you click the magnifying glass and all customers show. type the first couple letters hit enter and you are there. In 8 you click the search and you get a blank window. To view all customers you have to click again to get any results. It takes two or three times longer to define what you are searching for, THEN you hit enter and feel the performance problem while you wait, and wait for your results.

Within PO/SO Entry etc... go to Tools/Options and set Auto Populate Data or
Auto Populate Search -- play with these settings. You can also set up
dashboards from which you can browse or update directly to the selected
PO/SO with a simple right-click. Don't judge this book by its cover. There's
much power with the new interface -- but you have to learn how best to set
it up for your users. Dashboards may increase network traffic where Terminal
Server becomes a more valuable option. But it depends on your usage.

That is what I keep hearing, however I have administered our Vantage
system since 1997 (v2.7), and cannot say that I have ever experienced
any problems with installs, upgrades and patch application. I currently
have 8.0 installed in a test environment and have had more trouble with
it than with all other versions combined.

Initial installation went fairly smooth however I found the Epicor
documentation very sloppy. In the past I have felt that the
documentation has always been very accurate and left you with no
questions. 8.0 documentation does not even come close to that standard.

After applying patches, I was not able to get database conversions to
run properly until I was able to speak with support. After a couple of
hours we were able to get the system running again. Since our shop is 6
by 24, had this been a live patch install it would have been applied on
a Sunday and support would not have been available until 10 hours after
production started again. Tack on another 2 hours for the fix and we
would have experienced 12 hours of downtime. Unacceptable.

Since then I have been able to use 8.0 for some testing. Currently
however the database has stopped and I have not been able to get it
started. I have been offered two solutions by support; turn off any
Windows Firewall and all Virus protection. Neither has worked.
Occasionally I can get it to start and run but if I stop it does not
always restart. Again, unacceptable.

In summary, that is the cover I am judging by. I "played" with the
software, but not enough to explore all of it's possibilities(including
those options you outline). At this point I am far more concerned with
regaining my faith in the product because as it stands, given the
experiences mentioned above, I could never trust our business to it.

I will give Epicor the benefit of the doubt by adding that mine is a
test environment and I have not been 100% committed to it as any
interruption takes precedence over it. However, in comparison to the
stability I have come to expect, I think these examples indicate that
this product isn't there yet and until I can get it to function properly
on a consistent basis I will not be able to familiarize myself with the
dashboards and the powerful new interface.

Within PO/SO Entry etc... go to Tools/Options and set Auto Populate Data
or Auto Populate Search -- play with these settings. You can also set up
dashboards from which you can browse or update directly to the selected
PO/SO with a simple right-click. Don't judge this book by its cover.
There's much power with the new interface -- but you have to learn how
best to set it up for your users. Dashboards may increase network
traffic where Terminal Server becomes a more valuable option. But it
depends on your usage.

far more cumbersome than 6.1. I agree. Take for instance finding a
customer.
In 6.1, you click the magnifying glass and all customers show. type the
first couple letters hit enter and you are there. In 8 you click the
search
and you get a blank window. To view all customers you have to click
again to
get any results. It takes two or three times longer to define what you
are
searching for, THEN you hit enter and feel the performance problem while
you
wait, and wait for your results.

Charles,
My database is 3gb, my -B is set to 80000 and have had it as high as 160000
no luck.
I'm running dual Xeon but hey remember I'm the only one on the server and 8
is the only application running.
My spin locks have been adjusted from 2000 to 80000 which did let the system
at times run the cpu utilization higher.

How long does it take you to add 3 releases to an order? Can you beat 3
minutes and 55 seconds?
When I tab to the date fields the system says retrieving data for 6 to 10
seconds.

Sorry for the typo's earlier that Todd so gracefully pointed out.

Figured I'd better respond on list -

From the posting "The issues are not totally with the hardware"

The Mavis Beacon reply was in reference to the concept that when running a
new, VERY FAST, server with a STATE of the art system the -ONLY- reason for
data entry to be a slow process would be the old 2 finger peck style
typing???

Or, as one of my users told another user "if you hit the enter key a little
harder it goes faster" ...

It had NOTHING to do with typos in the posting.

I apologize if any one took this the wrong way.

I try to cache as much of my database as possible - speeds things up
tremendously.

We are on 6.0 and have a 1.5 GB database. Our server is maxed at 2GB of RAM
(I'm looking for a new server). I only leave 256K for the OS - the only
thing the machine does is serve Vantage. For tuning the Progress database,
I use 210000 blocks in the DB buffer (1.7 GB of RAM). For a 3 GB database
on a machine with 4 GB of RAM, try 420000 blocks in the DB buffer (3.5 GB of
RAM). That should make a difference.

After restarting the database or database server, I always run an online
backup. This caches the database in the DB buffer (or as much as will fit).
Otherwise, the database doesn't get cached until it is used. Those might
help your performance.

Charles,
My database is 3gb, my -B is set to 80000 and have had it as high as 160000
no luck. I'm running dual Xeon but hey remember I'm the only one on the
server and 8 is the only application running. My spin locks have been
adjusted from 2000 to 80000 which did let the system at times run the cpu
utilization higher.

How long does it take you to add 3 releases to an order? Can you beat 3
minutes and 55 seconds? When I tab to the date fields the system says
retrieving data for 6 to 10 seconds.

Sorry for the typo's earlier that Todd so gracefully pointed out.

Charles

This is after I load the form and cache to memory and also have loaded the
sales order So I'm just key punching and hitting tab or enter.

Is my system hosed, or can others enter transactions faster than this in
8.0? Please respond.

For those already running/installing Vantage 8.
What are your opinions on the system requirements 2.4 GHz and 768 MB - 1 GB
of RAM? Is this much necessary? How are machines with 512 MB RAM working
out? Machines with slower processors? We are prepping to make the jump and
want some real world opinion.

Patrick,
It is your system. I can't do much to help with what you need to do to
improve, but just to give you a frame of reference

We are live Vantage 8.00.711 (not sure how long ago we went to 8--February
I think--we were one of the first to go live)

The time for me (as a user on our live system) to enter the four releases
you listed below

37 seconds using the traditional screen entry
31 seconds using the list view entry

And that included time fumbling with my stopwatch :-)

I can't speak to the servers, but my computer is a Dell Optiplex GX270
2.66ghz, 1GB RAM.

And I don't have memory caching turned on in SO Entry (not my primary
function--I'm an engineer so I have it on in other screens I use more)

We did experience some of the speed issues you described in the beginning,
but the last several patches have done a lot to fix them. Also I know our
IT dept. had to work on several of the computers. I know some was just to
add RAM (like mine), I think almost everyone has a gig now. But some of the
oldest machines needed to be upgraded. I think is is reflected in Epicor
changing their recommendations from the very beginning to what they
recommend now (their recommendations were probably partly based on our
experiences)

Nearly everything now runs about the same speed as 6.1, and some is even
faster. And you get a lot of really nice features on 8.0 that don't come on
6.1 :-)

Let me know if there's anything else you want me to test, I haven't gotten
to use my stopwatch in a while--it was kind of fun!

Just added a SO with two releases -- almost instantly -- no problem with
dates. We're on TS directly connected to Vantage Server and Vantage 8.0.802

I've been extremely critical of Vantage 8 on this forum, even more so to
Epicor directly. And it's inexecuseable how it went GA with so many
problems. All they did was damage their and their product's reputation which
they may never recover for some of us.

Even though we still have issues, almost every critical and performance
problem we found so far have been fixed. So Electroimpact will continue to
work with Epicor to make Vantage a success. But our patience is being
severely tested.

"So Electroimpact will continue to work with Epicor to make Vantage a success."
-------

From us chickens......thank you! Every new frontier requires brave pioneers.

I have just started a 4 month investigation project for evaluating the costs & benefits of Vantage 8.0. The current dialogue is extremely helpful. By the time I get to Perspectives I expect I will have a fair idea about what I will need for a test/conversion server and hard questions for Epicor. But at the moment we are still looking at Spring-2007 as the probable "go live" for us. Cluck, cluck, cluck...beghawwww!

Chris
If I cache more than 210000 I get an error on the start up of the database.
The block size is 8192 so I'm using about 1.7 gb.

My test for entering releases I add one release first and save it thinking
everything should be cashed now.
Press New Record Icon.
Getting New.... 10 seconds
Tab to quantity column enter 50.
Tab to Need by Date.
Getting Data.... 10 seconds
Enter date. 091505
Tab to ship by date.
Getting Data.... 10 seconds.
Enter date 09/15/05.
Tab past end of row to get next record.
Saving Data.... 10 seconds
Getting New.... 10 seconds

Is this what all version 8 users are seeing for entering releases on sales
orders?
Listed below is my database startup log.

Charles

This is after I load the form and cache to memory and also have loaded the
sales order So I'm just key punching and hitting tab or enter.

Rich
Amy,

Thanks for the reply, I will keep tuning until I find the answer.

Patrick,
It is your system. I can't do much to help with what you need to do to
improve, but just to give you a frame of reference

We are live Vantage 8.00.711 (not sure how long ago we went to 8--February I
think--we were one of the first to go live)

Also I know our IT
dept. had to work on several of the computers. I know some was just to add
RAM (like mine), I think almost everyone has a gig now.

Charles

This is after I load the form and cache to memory and also have loaded the
sales order So I'm just key punching and hitting tab or enter.

We are implementing Vantage 8. Currently we have 35 workstations,
most of which are Pentium IIIs and are typically limited to between
256-768 MB of RAM. Most Pentium IIIs are limited to 512MB, so most
of our machines are at the bare minimum for Vantage. Of them, 12 are
getting max memory. For the ones at 256MB of RAM, they are getting
replaced; all 7 of them. It really hurts to see machines that can
run most business software like Office get tossed aside.

We were told not to go to TS because of memory leaks. Plus, I can't
even imagine putting enough memory or processing power in a server to
make it handle as many clients as we are running.

Sadly, when we evaluated the product, specs for version 8 were not
out. In an age where you are hearing terms like thin client,
client/server, browser-based, and .net, it should be a crime to have
memory requirements of 1GB! Even a nicely set up machine isn't all
that punchy (P4, 3.0 GHz, 1GB RAM, 100mbit NIC). We run 3D modeling
on workstations with these kind of specs. Running on 512MB is
useable, but not for power users. Through use, it seems to consume
meory and not release it (could be caching, then again maybe not --
haven't had time to chase it down).

And the craziest thing of all, is that one of my associates heard
that in the future the minimum RAM requirement will be 2GB! They are
going to hear from me if that happens.

So, to make a long story short, what do I think of the specs? Insane
with the potential to get more insane. Maybe that is because
Progress is expecting the same requirements on the client as they do
on the server.

Memory leaks from what? Who said this?

Split 35 users among 2-4 TS's with appropriate memory/cpu's in each and
leave the clients alone. Have the TS's direct-connected to Vantage Server
with 3-5 nics in it, 2 in the TS's.

Or use the blade/pc-rack idea suggested earlier.

V8 Live Clients using Citrix/TS: how many TS's/users/memory is working for
you?
