Vantage 8 over VPN/WAN

I just run the routing and remote access from the windows server and open the VPN port on the router. I have never had a problem with getting disconnected and the speed is about the same as in the office. I could see where the more users you have, the more of a problem it would be. With a terminal emulation (RDP/Citrix) you are pretty close to being capped as far as how much bandwidtth you use. With a VPN it's how much data the client can request and how big is your pipe. About the only way to contain it is implementing bandwidth caps on your vpn users. I do not know at what point though (cap on a VPN) vista service starts to degrade.

We tried it for a few months and the users were frequently
disconnected and it ran very sluggish. To be fair, there is a lot of
other traffic running through our connection to the plant (Exchange,
BlueCoat, etc.) and it choked it out. We opted for Citrix and it's
running great now. It seems to me like you have to consider the
other activity over the connection and if it's light, it may work
fine. An Epicor consultant told me that it's really hit or miss with
Vantage over VPN.

Hello!

Some of the threads today have touch on this topic but I was wondering
what people's experiences are like running a V8.03 client over a WAN or
VPN tunnel?

Can the client even run over these types of connections or is a
Citrix/Terminal Server solution the only way?

I am trying to determine what I would need to host a couple of users in

To make sure I understand correctly, are you saying that, from home, you
connect to your business via VPN and then run Vantage 8.03 client
directly from your home PC?

If I did understand correctly...then what do you mean by "when I get

Joe,

For what it is worth,

I am running v8 and I connect to the VPN (Cisco) from home, run Vantage
(client local on my Notebook) and only experience a slightly longer delay
that normal in accessing or committing information to the Database.

Ah..now I understand. Using RDC is similar to running over Citrix or
TS. I may end up taking this path.

Thanks for your input!

As anyone run the V8 client directly from the remote computer over WAN
or VPN connection?

Hi Paul! Thanks for the response!

To make sure I understand correctly, are you saying that, from home, you
connect to your business via VPN and then run Vantage 8.03 client

If I did understand correctly...then what do you mean by "when I get

Hello!

Some of the threads today have touch on this topic but I was wondering
what people's experiences are like running a V8.03 client over a WAN or
VPN tunnel?

Can the client even run over these types of connections or is a
Citrix/Terminal Server solution the only way?

I am trying to determine what I would need to host a couple of users in
Ireland on our V8 server in Massachusetts.

Hi Joe,

My two bits:
We are running in the oposite direction: our server is in Ireland and
we have a company in CA.
Ireland hosts a Terminal Server (no Citrix) and all USA users RDC
onto it over a standard VPN.
Both companies have leased lines - but only onto the internet, we
don't have a direct connection between us. Result: when the internet
goes slow, Vantage seems to run VERY slow. Screen refreshes can be
sluggish at the best of times (quite usable, but sluggish), but on a
bad day they seem interminable.
The internet DOES go slow and so I am currently looking into a Frame
Relay connection (expensive!).
Get you Irish users to ping the USA server. A response of 180ms is
normal for our users.
I was over in the US office recently, and I connected directly from
my laptop to Vantage over the VPN. The program itself seemed to run
very well and data access seemed fine. So much so, that our USA FC is
going to install Vantage on her own machine and see how in runs on a
day-to-day basis.
I'm not aware of any problems with connections dropping.

Regards,

Nigel.

Joe,

The only problems over the VPN that I have experienced is if the VPN
disconnects for some reason. Otherwise I have yet to experience Vantage
dropping the connection over the VPN.

I ran 8.03 over VPN with DSL access and it works; however not
without some delays. Although I have never been disconnected from
the server, neither VPN or Vantage, I perform lots of saves between
work.

Also, it takes aprox. 45 minutes to download the client updates when
after performing a server patch.

I also tried using SSH tunnels as well, it performs better, but I
have more disconnects with it; not to mentioned i have to setup the
hosts file and ports forwarding. (Decided not worth it)

Lately I have been using Terminal Server's RDP in case I get
disconnected.

We have a couple users in the Netherlands, and I am planning to
provide remote access via a product called Load Balancer/Application
Server from X2. The Application server allows you to export an
application via RDP without sending the entire desktop so it "looks"
like vantage is running locally.
Check it out at http://www.2x.com/applicationserver/ ; they have a
free 5 license edition.

I hope it helps,

Percy Perez
