Vantage 8 Installation instructions

I've never responded to any emails in the past but I have found a company
that will do consulting work with Vantage and Crystal. In fact, one of the
primaries used to be a Vantage user from many years agao and has done his
own installations while running Vantage. I've never had opportunity to work
with them, but I expect to in the near future. Their rates seem good. The
company is (ISI) Intelligent Systems Integration, (Ph.) 330 335-5291, (Fx.)
330 335-7275. I've spoken with Doug Demiter and Rick Lane. Good Luck! Let
me know how it works out.

The instructions never left you with a question, they were dead on.
-------------------

Not withstanding the references in the 6.0 to 6.1 Vantage upgrade to Vista
folder names.

I've always had trouble with the upgrades - both from the disjointed
organization of the instructions to the lack of troubleshooting suggestions
for issues related to OS software (like MDAC patch levels not being up to a
certain level). Even prior to 8.0 they make far too many assumptions about
both the skill of the upgrader and in the wording of the instructions. A
clearer, step-by-step with screen shots, format would be very helpful.

But I agree, the pressure to "hire" consulting has been strong and making
the solo upgrade difficult does nothing but support that pressure.

That is the first thing I pointed out to them when installing 8.0 several
months ago. In the past you could rely 100% on your installation going well
if you followed the instructions carefully. The instructions never left you
with a question, they were dead on. The 8.0 instructions leave you guessing
in several places on how to proceed. I think this is there way to sell you
consulting services.

Were on our third set of installation instructions from Epicor and these are
wrong too. Does anyone have a corrected set of instructions on how to
install Vantage 8 and import a copy of your 6.1 database that will actually
work. Were doing this on a Windows 2003 server and have been upgrading and
working with Vantage since version 2.

It blows our mind that we can't get this software to load on the server and
run.

Any imput would be welcome at this point. Were on the phone with Vantage

We are interested in building a bridge between Vantage and Solidworks/dbworks. Specifically:

1. Create new part numbers in dbworks and synchronise with Vantage. If the part does not exist in Vantage, the part would be created.
2. Generate a part list in Solidworks/dbworks and load the BOM into Vantage. Note that the part list is a detailed list of all the parts and Vantage BOM in a summarized list of material used to generated the purchase suggestions. At this point, I do not know if Solidworks/dbworks can summarise the part list itself.
3. Possibly we would be interested to create parts in Vantage and then synchronise Solidworks/dbworks accordingly.

Has anyone done this, and do we know what other companies might have done part or all of this?

Thank you!
Dave Cyr

We're also contemplating a CAD integration with Vantage but need Catia 5
support as well as Solidworks, among others. Some of our engineers like
PDMWorks which only works with Solidworks. We're looking at Conisio, Agile,
SmartTeam and Vantage PLM for a company-wide solution. Assume they integrate
to Vantage with either ODBC or a call mechanism for a program we or someone
else writes to update the Vantage BOM and Part Master. Updating Vantage from
the CAD package without being in Vantage is a requirement. Currently going
through the vendor selection process for a pilot project.

Hello Dave,

I have been working as a DBWorks/Solidworks consultant for a company
in Laval (Québec) for the past year. They too were very much
interested in establishing some form of communication with Vantage,
but as you are surely aware, DBWorks currently has no module for
integrating with Progress/Vantage.

From the point of view of our Vantage administrator, inserting new
parts through ODBC was a nightmare. Experiences were apparently made
and did not prove to be very successful (missing references in related
tables or such: I was not there at the time). Although I have fiddled
quite a bit with reading from and writing to DBWorks through ODBC
(MSDE), I only looked into *reading* from Vantage, not writing.

Last we spoke, MechWorks/DBWorks seemed interested in putting together
a special module for communicating with Vantage, but the cost would
have been ours to bear, and it was not clear as to what kind of
support they would have required from the Vantage people.

Voilà . My contract there has ended last week, but I am sure they are
still looking into this – perhaps you both can talk. If you like, drop
me a line at jpvalois@... and I'll put you in touch.

Bye bye,

Our engineers use solidworks, and they too, would like a way to drop in the
bom's, parts, to automatically create in Vista (smaller/non-multi-plant)
version of Vantage.

We are in process of installing 8.0 where supposedly "cut & paste" will work
better -- I know in past, need special coding of the excel type files to
import BOMs directly.

However, as a custom machine builder, the BOM may not include all parts, as
well as may not be complete at time need to purchase the initial items for a
project, due to lead time of the parts.
Mechanical Engineering uses Solidworks, and are changing from 2005 to 2006
currently. However, our Electrical Dept, they still use Autocad 2000, but
again, not necessarily complete a full BOM within it.

We are trying to find the best way to purchase items to a JOB without having
to manually go through several extra steps to order an item to a Job if the
item is not on the BOM already. Any suggestions besides importing or
copying the BOMs in, and doing purchasing suggestions to self-generate
initial PO's? Quickest ways for engineers.

I know we have electrical engineers as well as an IT programmer/consultant
for our Woodworking product, Razorgage, that know visual basic, so,
depending on direction & interest of others -- could see where development
of a tool or excel sheet format that would import in & create parts --
defaulting various options -- may indeed be possible. If there are others
out there, perhaps a tool could be put in place for version 8, where the
XML, and Visual Basic is more prevalent. We have a Linux server, so, there
would be a need for others to possibly have to test in a Windows environment
if we ever pursued such work. We would also be willing to test in a Linux
environment, for any others that create a tool, or aide in their
development. This isn't our primary focus, and therefore, would probably be
done after hours, and possibly, at my own expense, if was to pursue this.
We are trying to avoid too HEAVY of customization, from the standpoint that
if customize TOO much, become unable to Upgrade, and Improve with the
software.

Dave,
We are using "eExplorer", a product by Aimasoft, Inc.
(www.aimasoft.com) to link Vantage to Solidworks. Here are the basic
steps we go through to insure that our SolidWorks drawing BOM is
exactly the same as the Vantage BOM:

1. All new part definitions are entered one time, into Vantage.
2. All SolidWorks part and assembly file names are changed to match
the new part numbers. (This is not necessary but we thought that this
was better than using random file names that could get very confusing
very quickly).
3. We import the SolidWorks BOM structure into eExplorer by "loading"
only the top assembly model to verify the that all of the component
parts exist in Vantage and do a quick check that the parts are
correct. The SolidWorks files and their locations are also then
automatically "linked" to the part numbers in the Vantage database so
we can quickly find them using eExplorer for viewing, printing etc.
4. We then export the BOM from the Solidworks assembly drawing to a
csv file for importing into Vantage.

eExplorer has many other useful features including reporting and
vaulting with checkin/checkout functionality.

We have been using another product from Aimasoft called "BOMlink" for
several years for similar integration of AutoCAD with Vantage.

I'm a mirror of your installation, Vntg since version 2, installed 8 on
Server 2003.
I did get it going a couple of months ago but would agree there was
confusion.
I did keep notes and screen dumps of my installation.
What specifically are your issues?

We finally have some things going now after receiving our fouth set of
instructions and having Vantage support on the phone while doing the
conversion. Thanks to all that have replied. We should have more specific
questions later today. I think we have the database conversion done. The
main thing killing us was some of the procedures that were run from a client
in the past were run on the server this time....as per vantage support.

Thanks!

The instructions never left you with a question, they were dead on.
-------------------

Not withstanding the references in the 6.0 to 6.1 Vantage upgrade to Vista folder names.

I've always had trouble with the upgrades - both from the disjointed organization of the instructions to the lack of troubleshooting suggestions for issues related to OS software (like MDAC patch levels not being up to a certain level). Even prior to 8.0 they make far too many assumptions about both the skill of the upgrader and in the wording of the instructions. A clearer, step-by-step with screen shots, format would be very helpful.

But I agree, the pressure to "hire" consulting has been strong and making the solo upgrade difficult does nothing but support that pressure.

That is the first thing I pointed out to them when installing 8.0 several months ago. In the past you could rely 100% on your installation going well if you followed the instructions carefully. The instructions never left you with a question, they were dead on. The 8.0 instructions leave you guessing in several places on how to proceed. I think this is there way to sell you consulting services.

Were on the phone with Vantage
support, but are quickly loosing faith.

I have to agree with Todd C., that I've always found a few problems
with the instructions for upgrading, but thankfully I was always
doing it on a test DB or server so I could get help and correct the
process before doing the live upgrade.

Someone should tell Epicor that poor documentation is not a good way
to increase consulting revenue. It is a good way to P/O IT people.
Hopefully somebody is listening!
