Vantage 8 Backup on Server 2008

I guess everybody agrees so far that our backup is taking way to long to run. I was looking at Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler and there are a bunch of task running in the early a.m. I have no idea what all of these active tasks are. It look like Windows Server 2008 has several turned on by default. I have no idea if they are slowing our backup down or not. I might change the start time on some of them to see if that will help.

To those of you who are running Vantage 8.03 on Server 2008. Have any of you noticed that your backup is taking longer than it used to on Server 2003?

We went from Server 2003 (32-bit) to Server 2008 (64-bit). Our used to run about 60 minutes on Server 2003 and now it runs about 3 hours on Server 2008.

Any idea why?
You didn't say if you were SQL or Progress, but on our 4gb Progress database, an
online PROBKUP takes about 25 seconds. We are running 8.03.408A on Windows
2008R2 64bit Enterprise with two X5650 processors and a Raid 10 with four solid
state drives.

I am sorry I did forget that part. We are running on Progress Database.

1 D:
2 cd \epicor\oe101b\bin
3 rem probkup online D:\epicor\mfgsys803\db\mfgsys D:\backup\backup.1
4 mfgbkup online D:\epicor\mfgsys803\db\mfgsys D:\backup\backup.1

I tried using the "probkup" method on line 3, of course with the "rem" and the "mfgbkup" method on line 4.

Either way did not make a difference. When backup was runnig on Server 2003, it took an hour. Now that we are running 8.03.409c on Server 2008 R2 64-bit Standard edition with RAID-10 (10 Drives) and 32 GB of RAM. The backup is taking 3 hours. This server is more powerful than our old server we just came off of. This doesn't make sense!

Something is not right with your backup taking so long.
I believe that both backup statements 3 and 4 actually do the same thing.

Our 9GB db on Server 2008 64-Bit takes about 9 minutes. On our test server 2003 32-bit about 20 minutes. (Both Raid 10). I did find backing up with the destination on a different physical drive to be much faster (and not the C: drive). We are on E9, running Progress 10.2A 32-Bit.

I did an offline backup last night and the time went from 25 seconds to 17
seconds. Somewhat of an impovement, but it just may have been because no one
was on the system.

Also, can you try an offline backup and see if it takes just as long?

I would do some read/write tests on you raid 10 and see if it is performing as
expected. I would also check your CPU utilization during a backup and see what
is happening there.
