Vantage 8.0

Instead of leaving your history at 6.1 or some other version, I would suggest bringing up to 8.0 then starting a new company in 8.0 for your "cleaned up" data. That way you would not have to maintain 6.1 and 8.0 databases and your users would access the historical data and current data with the same 8.0 interface.

I heard it plainly at Perspectives that nobody will be forced to go to 8.0. It will be totally based on each user's time frame. They are very aware of the hardware and conversion cost hurdles.

That having been said to read between the lines and from past experience there will someday come a time when the cost to not switch will be pretty high. Thinking back to the DCD-Classic to Vantage migration the incentives for them to get everyone off of Classic became pretty strong. New development in 6.10 will be very limited or non-existant and the number of support personal qualified to support it will shrink over time. So someday even if they don't force people to move up it will be difficult not to. Best guess....5 years or so.

Well everyone talks about it being such a change and all the side reports that people have will have to change as well... makes you wonder how long you should be trying to improve what you have until after you go to 8.0. But if you have years before you might see any affect of being in their "dark ages" ... then I guess the time could be well spent.

available, he stated that it is ready and that you must
request it from your CAM.

Hello-

I don't know if you mean "the training in our part of the country" vs.
"the training in our area of specialization," but I've been reasonably
impressed with the eLearning items available via
https://epicweb.epicor.com -- There is a massive amount of training in
manufacturing/scheduling/ops, etc. (relative to a much smaller amount of
material on the finance/sysadmin side.)

In any case, it's worth spending the time to get through the applicable
eLearning courses. Amanda Petrich (apetrich@...) has done a very
good job of getting these materials together, recorded and posted. We're
in the midst of 8.0 implementation, and they've been invaluable to us
and to our users.

I have asked this question several times over the past few months from
Epicor's data migration department and we have had no success. For
example, we requested the following tables to be migrated by Epicor.

Customer Master

Vendor Master

Part Master

Part Material (BOM)

Part Operation (Routing, BOO not to scare you)

Part Cost Qty

When we received the excel data templates with instructions, it was very
slim. The required field were hi-lited by re and the fields that
required other tables to be populated were hi-lited in blue. But this
was almost ridiculous. For example, The customer table only had the
Customer ID hi-lited in red. We asked support is this really it, would
you not require a Customer Name, Address, Contactr, etc. They responded
, Yes it would make sense that you would need a name in order to know
who you were talking to. In addition the 3 sentence instruction sheet
said to reference the data dictionary to identify the default settings.
We as being dummies, assumed that this was auto populated by the data
conversion. WRONG. As a result our data import is wrong. We were
never advised as to what was missing or what was wrong. We now have to
start over because we cannot complete a simple process script to create
a MOM. Oh BOM and BOO Oh Bill of Material and Routing.

We just had this conversation yesterday and I am waiting for the
response from Epicor. I was glad to see your question, because I
thought we were the only ones to think this way and was starting
question if we were crazy. We have 68 days to go live!!!!

We are just starting out too but our group has a lot of MRP/ERP
implementations under our belt. I would caution you about just trying to get
one module implemented though. You may make decisions that will cause
difficulty for the rest of your implementation. A day or two of consulting
may save you far more money than going it alone.

Having said that, in most systems, it has been my experience that you search
all tables for account numbers and make sure your chart of accounts is
complete before you do anything else. (In V8, the company setup is a good
place to start...)

Thanks for your replies.

To answer your question first, John, we find the training in our
geographical area weak.

Allan, we ran across the same silly recommendations on what fields
in what tables MUST be filled out. For example, we were told the
Class Codes (like commodity codes, not ABC Class Codes) for Parts
MUST be filled out...not so. This is nice to have, but even their
training manuals say it's optional. This is such an important
table, I would think Epicor would be more thoughtful in their
recommendations.

This week some of us are attending off-site Epicor training
(Knowledge Camp) at their facility. Equally, as poor. For example,
the trainer is not telling folks they need to set up tables!!! This
should be a basic training course. The assumption is that students
already have basic knowledge of the system.

I think the system will be fine, but the training script needs to be
changed.

Thank you both for your input. I'm sure that once we're into it
more I'll have some specific questions.

Just as an FYI, we manufacture capital equipment, with multi level
BOMs. Our products have about 2,000 parts. We purchase electronics,
sheet-metal fabrications, machined, molded plastic components, pcb
assemblies, etc. and alot of turn-key assemblies. We make some
unique sub assemblies in house and do final assembly in-house.

To answer your question first, John, we find the training in our
geographical area weak.

Allan, we ran across the same silly recommendations on what fields in
what tables MUST be filled out. For example, we were told the Class
Codes (like commodity codes, not ABC Class Codes) for Parts MUST be
filled out...not so. This is nice to have, but even their training
manuals say it's optional. This is such an important table, I would
think Epicor would be more thoughtful in their recommendations.

This week some of us are attending off-site Epicor training (Knowledge
Camp) at their facility. Equally, as poor. For example, the trainer is
not telling folks they need to set up tables!!! This should be a basic
training course. The assumption is that students already have basic
knowledge of the system.

I think the system will be fine, but the training script needs to be
changed.

Thank you both for your input. I'm sure that once we're into it more
I'll have some specific questions.

Just as an FYI, we manufacture capital equipment, with multi level BOMs.
Our products have about 2,000 parts. We purchase electronics,
sheet-metal fabrications, machined, molded plastic components, pcb
assemblies, etc. and alot of turn-key assemblies. We make some unique
sub assemblies in house and do final assembly in-house.

Actually, to be fair, there are a number of consulting organizations as
members of this group. Several of which I've worked with, each with
excellent talents. I would prefer in fairness to these other groups and
Epicor, that specific organization names not be publicly posted. But by all

Thanks for your replies.

To answer your question first, John, we find the training in our
geographical area weak.

Allan, we ran across the same silly recommendations on what fields in
what tables MUST be filled out. For example, we were told the Class
Codes (like commodity codes, not ABC Class Codes) for Parts MUST be
filled out...not so. This is nice to have, but even their training
manuals say it's optional. This is such an important table, I would
think Epicor would be more thoughtful in their recommendations.

This week some of us are attending off-site Epicor training (Knowledge
Camp) at their facility. Equally, as poor. For example, the trainer is
not telling folks they need to set up tables!!! This should be a basic
training course. The assumption is that students already have basic
knowledge of the system.

I think the system will be fine, but the training script needs to be
changed.

Thank you both for your input. I'm sure that once we're into it more
I'll have some specific questions.

Just as an FYI, we manufacture capital equipment, with multi level BOMs.
Our products have about 2,000 parts. We purchase electronics,
sheet-metal fabrications, machined, molded plastic components, pcb
assemblies, etc. and alot of turn-key assemblies. We make some unique
sub assemblies in house and do final assembly in-house.
