Vantage 6.1 Global-Alerts "Send Failure"

OK I get it now.....

From the Help file.

4. Once you have created alert groups, assign specific people to those
groups through Person Maintenance. You can then assign those people to
production teams. When you set up a job, associate a production team
with the job. The members of that team will receive shop warnings and
global alerts for that job according to the alert groups of which they
are members.

Alert Groups by itself doesn't generate any Alerts... I'll still need
to associate the Person with the Alert Group into Production Teams,
and associate the Jobs to the Teams.

Initially I got the impression that Alert Group will work by itself.
Thanks for reading~

Greetings,

Vantage 6.10.540 09/11/06

We have 7 Data Collection Units in our workshop.

3 on Windows XP
3 on Windows 2000
1 on Windows 98

It takes for ever to load Vantage Plant floor on any of these PC besides Windows 98 Vantage Plant floor just Pops Rite up in on this machine. Not sure why this happens but this sure does encourages me to install Windows 98 on all the Plant floor machines.

Also how can I Secure the plant floor window so that users cannot exit out of it and also disable the button that users don't need access to.

Another Issue I have is that anytime you start vantage and there is an extra instance of Vantage running or hung-up on the same computer or another computer it comes back as all data collection licenses are being used. Just so you also know I have one user "shop" that is saved in the Vantage Plant Floor Shortcut to automatically bring up Plant Floor without asking for a password.

Besides fixing the above issues how can I streamline this whole data collection process so the data collection modules stay up 24x7.

Any advise is this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I will try to offer some thoughts off the top...

Speed Issue:
Almost all our DC PCs are Win-98 and I see the same difference from time to time. A few things to check on Win2K and XP would be in the NIC settings....make sure that the card can not power down when idle. Win98 machines tend to be from before this was common so their NICs may not have it. Also...in the mfgwrk61 working folder on the slow machines check for the log file regocx.log. If the starting time stamp and the ending time stamp are more than 15 seconds different then you likely have a networking hardware compatibility issue. Mine is typically 3-4 seconds but I've had slow machines take 2-3 minutes. Moving them to a different network switch fixed it. You might also try updated drivers or play with speed settings on the NIC to better match the switch settings. Another thing to try is to set the splash screen durration very low for Shop Floor....sometimes the login screen waits for it to go away.

Securing Screen:
There may be some group policy settings in Win2K and especially in Win-XP that can secure the desktop. Not sure about preventing exiting while within Vantage though.

Shop User:
We also have one user named Shop and there are occasional ghost sessions that eat a license. I have to go in via ProMon and see if there are duplicates. On the Win-98 machines there is a network setting that will report the PC name (not the user ID) in ProMon. For post-Win98 machines I have to use the Connected Users item under Utilities in order to see the device name for all the Shop users and see if one is duplicated or there is a conencted session for the one that crashed...then get the User Number to use in ProMon and kill that session.

One of the issues I had with the Plant Floor screen was the users
hitting the Exit button because they did not understand they were
exiting Vantage they thought they were exiting the screen. I went into
Customization mode and reduced the size of the exit button to as small
as I could. It's now about 1/16th" square. They thought it disappeared.
It sure helped a lot !!!!

Thanks, but that doesn't appear to be the problem. I'm using my own
email address, which I've double- and triple-checked by now.

Does the "Port Number" field in the Company email-setup dialog-box make
a difference, as long as the port is not in use by any other processes?

Strangest thing, though - scrolling back thru the Process Server log, I
see a few emails were actually sent, in the middle of all the "Send
failure" messages. The strangest part, however, is that in searching
for the messages in my email system (since I never got them), it turns
out those messages were delivered to a user who is not even specified as
a "Person" in the system!

Do I perhaps need to re-start any of my Vantage services to make these
changes take effect? I've already restarted the Process Server and
Global Alerts process. What about maybe logging-out and back in to the
MES stations?

Is it possible that an email-address has somehow been hard-coded into
the function for sending the Global Alerts/Shop Warnings? If so, I'm
sure it would be a simple matter to find and replace the hard-coded
address with the address of a distribution-group instead...

Thanks again.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage 6.1 Global-Alerts "Send Failure"

(Sorry about the formatting in that last email - I was using a different
editor earlier)

I was asked to look into turning on some of the Global Alerts and Shop
Warnings. In doing so, I created a new "Alert Group," created a new
"Person," and assigned the new "Person" to the "Alert Group."

I also made sure that the "Person" name-field was the same as the "User"
name field in Vantage, and also the same as the "Display Name" field in
Active Directory.

In the Process Server log, I am seeing the following:

06/10/08 12:49:14 Email - Send failure - SMTP Code:-1 No email
recipients
06/10/08 12:49:14 Email - Sending Email
06/10/08 12:49:14 Processing Email

I do have my internal email server configured in the "Company" setup.
Is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks!

It turns out that "Global Alerts" will work properly when sending an
email, but "Shop Warnings" still turn up errors in the Error Log saying
no email address was specified.

I'm thinking that a hard-coded email address in a "Shop Warning" routine
could be a likely culprit - does anyone know where such a thing may have
been set?

Is it possible that an email-address has somehow been hard-coded into
the function for sending the Global Alerts/Shop Warnings? If so, I'm
sure it would be a simple matter to find and replace the hard-coded
address with the address of a distribution-group instead...

Thanks again.

Jasper -

Thanks, but that doesn't appear to be the problem. I'm using my own
email address, which I've double- and triple-checked by now.

Does the "Port Number" field in the Company email-setup dialog-box make
a difference, as long as the port is not in use by any other processes?

Check your email addresses. I remember having this problem and it turned
out to be a wrong or invalid email address.

Hi Ari,
Did you get solution to the problem?

I'm experiencing the exact same problem.
I do not have any problem sending an email out, IF i entered my email
directly into the Global Alert 'TO' or CC sections.

However, using Alert Groups, I'm stuck with the same problem.
No Email Recipients.

I'm using the built in MANAGER account, and created a Person with the
ID MANAGER, Name System Manager.

Thanks a lot !

OK, I've just tested it with Production Team as well.

Production team WORKS.
Direct email via TO field in Global Alert WORKS
Alert Group DOESN'T WORK!!

I must be missing something..... but what?
