I hear ya there regarding the Data Collection PC's, but we have a new State
of the Art, supposedly, Server from Dell. We would like to have seen some
better performance gains. Terminal Server will solve our DC problems.

Well, we finally took the plunge and upgraded from 5.0 to 6.0 over
Thanksgiving weekend. The upgrade went pretty smooth, but we have a
couple of issues that my boss wanted me to ask you all about.

1. When our Controller tried to run the Capture and Post he locked
up shipping, they got a message saying that the PartTran table was
locked by the Controller, so we had to end the Capture and Post so
shipping could continue working. Support says that they would advise
us to run the capture and post after hours or during a lunch break.
With version 5, we never had a problem running it during the work
day, and since it took about 1/2 hour in 5, don't know how long it
might take in 6, and we work 24 hours a day, and our production lunch
breaks are only 20 minutes, I don't know when we are supposed to
squeeze this in! What is everyone else doing?

2. The new Plant Floor screens are way slower than the old data
collections screens. We are experiencing lines at the terminals to
clock in and out. Has anyone else experienced a dramatic slow down?
Our Data Collection PC's are quite old and wimpy, 133's I think, but
they worked quite well with Version 5. We are thinking of using
Terminal Server on them to see if that speeds them up. Any ideas or
comments?

3. Overall system speed is OK, but some reports like the A/R aging
are taking a lot longer to run. I know they changed it from a
progress to a crystal report, but I think its taking twice as long to
run. We upgraded servers and OS during the upgrade and were hoping
to see performance gains, but we are mostly hearing complaints about
things being slower, has anyone else experienced this?

On item two - change out the NIC’s to 10/100s. It makes a big
difference. I have 12 DC’s and they are P 200’s.
On item three - did you put in the latest patch. I’m on 6.0 .513 and the
513 patch made a big difference on the run times of all calc’s involving
credit. It puts in a new index.

Way off topic and I apologize in advance. I have a former boss whom I am
still on good terms with who needs to let their IT admin go for ethical
reasons. He is exceptionally paranoid but is the only IT guy for the
company and has been so for 6 years. My former boss asked for advice on how
to securely replace this guy. He has all the passwords, firewall setup,
etc.

This would be a nightmare in my book. I mean if I wanted to I could walk
and my company would have a hard time securing every way in if I wanted to
get in and I've documented everything.

I know it was stupid to put themselves in this position but hey they are
there.

Any advice? I've suggested bringing in a security expert to "help" the IT
guy go through their network, ensure its security and then document
everything but I imagine that can be pricey. He's looking to me to help
insure they are secure and while I want to help there is a real problem of
guaranteeing security.

Thanks for the advice.

Paranoia is, I think, is not an un-natural trait in an IT Admin, (come
on guys admit it) in the right measure of course. Management has a
right to an accurate list of passwords. If your guy doesn't give those
up, it is a criminal offense. First off I'd get that list, keeping in
mind that he can change them at any time, so twere best done as quickly
as possible afterwards. Second, I would have a VERY good technical
consultant on hand to supervise his exit. After the deed is done, get
your consultant in and first off completely redo the connections and
firewalls take the connection off line if possible. Completely new
software if possible, change your IP address if possible. Disable, BUT
DO NOT DELETE, the old ADMIN accounts and his personal accounts (VERY
IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT DELETE THOSE ACCOUNTS, Change ALL user
passwords as soon as possible, scan the entire network for any
"surprises". Take his personal machine OFF THE NETWORK until a thorough
scan is done, remove any documents of importance then reformat the drive
on his personal workstation. Find out about and account for all backup
tapes, account for ALL the backup copies if you can (he can send a copy
to the IRS). After you have scanned the network deeply and thoroughly,
ARCHIVE ALL THE OLD BACKUP TAPES and start a new set. Go through all
media in his work area and scan them all, floppies, cd's dvd's. Look
for any loose uninstalled hard drives and scan or scrap them. Scan the
system for bootleg software, all computers, all systems. (Hello, BSA?
My old employer used bootleg software. Could you bust them). Clear it
all out, as quickly as possible. This is just off the top of my head,
if the voices tell me of any other thoughts to have I'll let you know.

Off the top of my head the issue of the Admin having exclusive knowledge of passwords would be troubling. A company called Winternals has a product called "Locksmith" which can reveal passwords and then allow them to be changed. This would work on regular admin type accounts was well as any suspected "backdoor" user accounts.

To be really paranoid he would also have to look for "drop dead" services that monitor for activity by the Admin person and seeing none for a period assume he is gone and start doing damage - sometimes really subtle damage like replacing nightly backup with a "flawed" version that skips critical files - might not get noticed for a long time. Little things to cause chaos and aggravation without causing overt damage.

Bringing in a security consultant under the guise of a security audit while the current Admin is still there might allow scoping things out before the axe falls. Something like "company auditors have mandated a security audit so could you help the auditor out?" After the deed is done the security consultant could then take swift steps to lock things down. Yup, would probably be pricey.

On item 2, we found that we couldn't run Plant Floor Data Collection
on less than a P266 and that was only if it's hard wired...not
wireless. The amount of RAM also had an effect on the speed. We had
256MB RAM in the P266 and it was acceptable. But now we mostly use
P300's hard wired.

There is no guarantee. Find a consultant or replacement IT admin and have
him ready to start. If your existing Admin is that paranoid and has an
ethics problem I doubt you have much of a chance of documenting the system
prior to his departure. Bring your IT admin into a meeting to discuss his
termination. Have the consultant start securing points of access from the
outside, even if you have to sever access to the net and email temporarily.
Outside access is the primary concern, internal access can be addressed
immediately following. Do as much as you can while your admin is in the
meeting.

Once you finish the termination interview have security walk the former
Admin to his car. He does not go back to his office, he never has access to
a computer. He doesn't go anywhere with out an escort. You can box his
office yourself and look for documentation as you go. Provide an itemized
list of everything you box up and have him sign for it at a later date.

At least this was the way a Senior IT Admin explained this scenario to me.
Her assumption was a scorched earth policy was the best approach even if it
cost you extra in the short term. Their policy was to always pay the former
employee for a two weeks notice, any additional severance depending on their
policies and the nature of the infraction, and to have security walk you out
the door immediately.

Good luck.

Coming from an IT Admin in the same position, being the only one with any
information regarding passwords, firewall, setup, etc, anyway you try and
bring up the topic the IT Admin will know something is up with one thing or
another. If you bring in a consultant to 'help' he will think that his
abilities are being questioned and would guess something is up. In this
position, you may be better suited by saying "We want to have a backup for
you in case you get hit by a bus, you are unreachable, you are on vacation,
you are sick, etc." Is it possible to say that you need to hire a helper
for him? This may work to a good advantage by saying "You seem very
overworked, we would like to hire someone to help you out and ease your
load" The admin, however, may be onto that and be reluctant to give out
crucial info.

Depending on his status with final pay or vacation buy out, you should be
able to hold any final pay for an exit interview where you can ask a list of
questions. The down side to that is he is likely only to answer the
questions asked, and not give up important info if not asked for it. It's a
very tough position to be in, it definitely gives the IT person the upper
hand to some extent. Worst case though, it's not tough to have a good
consultant figure the bulk of everything out. There are tools to recover a
lost admin password and it's not like networks are hard to figure out with
the proper skills.

Either way you go, good luck.

Hello Jim,
We went through this about a year ago. We hired an outside consultant
to come in under the guise of checking our security. He took three days to
get a handle on all the passwords and open gateways. On day four the
employee was let go. On the same day we did all the things listed by
Shirley along with contacted our ISP and other outside sources to make them
aware the employee no longer had any authority to access account
information. We also changed the passwords for anybody who had admin
rights, in our case the owners.

Good luck,

Mark Dupuis

Also check for any batch files (*.bat) and task scheduler. We had an admin that had a batch file that did a lot of nasty things to our data and network. All he did was put it on a task scheduler to run a month after he was gone. It was set to delete itself after it ran to hide any evidences. Good thing I found it!

Just a thought!

Cliff,

The PC's do have new 10/100 NIC's and we are on Patch .515. We've
found that using Terminal Server for the Plant Floor problem will
help.

I hear ya there regarding the Data Collection PC's, but we have a new
State of the Art, supposedly, Server from Dell. We would like to
have seen some better performance gains. Terminal Server will solve
our DC problems.

Server alone would not do. TCP negotiations-packets of info transmitted
through your network does count also. If your terminals take a long time to
log into Vantage, you might want to look at your network performance more
closely.
