[Vantage 5.00 3.50]Inventory Bar Coding

As another alternative, there are multi-dimensional symbologies and readers
like Data Matrix and GoCode. These symbologies not only allow for an order
of magnitude increase in data density but also are checked with Reed Solomon
error correction allowing vastly improved accuracy even with partially
obscured or damaged codes. Additionally, they are designed to be directly
stamped or etched onto raw materials and read with the same accuracy as
printed labels effectively eliminating the need for label printers.

The down side is that the readers have to be CCD image scanners and are much
more expensive (read $600 to $800). Since they are true image scanners,
however, one clever added benefit is that they can be used as shop floor
image capture devices for visual defect tracking...

There are more expensive labels that do not smear or tear off. You need to
talk to a bar code equipment supplier.

Is anyone using Bar Coded Inventory Tags or pick list to issue or
receive inventory to and from Vantage? If so, what scanning devices
or equipment are you using and how does the scanned information get
to Vanatage? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.
In case anyone responded to this off list, this is a hot topic for me as
well. I am being asked to look into bar-coding our inventory. No one seems
to be able to put there finger on just what they want it to do for us, but I
have not doubts it will be of value. Any response would be appreciated here
as well.
We are currently using Barcodes for data collection and using mostly
Welch/Allen scanners (I would check the spelling on that, but I am a little
lazy just after lunch and all).
Thanks for any information anyone can offer.

I have also put out a couple of requests for bar coding info. There are

question. There are threads with information about equipment but not on
the process of receiving, cycle counts and shipping with bar codes. If
I missed this, please contact me.

We are looking to use this in receiving. Our suppliers will provide us
with packing slips that have bar codes for the parts. The other use is
for cycle counts. When they physically count the parts and make an
adjustment to the inventory. Just scan the bar code on a label for that
part and enter the correct quantity. Any information on those
operations would be appreciated.

Debbie,

Think of scanners as keyboard extensions. Anything that you can type on the
keyboard the scanners can read and type it for you. In my opinion in
receiving you need "Vendor ID", vendor "Packing Slip#", your "PO Number" and
may be received "Qty" in bar codes. Of course having Part Numbers and Bin
Numbers in bar code will help in stock room to save time on typing and
prevent confusion. We use fairly inexpensive scanners, about $150. I
purchased one just to play with and learn, since it worked so nicely for us
we purchased a couple more.
May be you should do the same. If you need any info on the scanner let me
know.

Could you please provide information on the scanner. Is it wireless or do
you need to have a computer in receiving? How does this interact with
Vantage, the bar coded information hits the appropriate fields in receiving
how? Any info is appreciated.

If you need any info on the scanner let me
know.

For those using bar coding, does anybody have parts that are large castings,
greasy, or otherwise not condusive to using a stick on bar code? I've heard
murmur through the grapevine that somebody is talking about bar codes here
again and most of our parts are just that - the final machined or cast part
is thrown in a bin. Any ways to get around it that have worked? I can see
tags being ripped off and grease smearing the bar code beyond being read.

Thanks,
Rick
At a former employer we had to put labels on large roll formed steel panels.
The panels were often lubricated and somewhat greasy. They also were stored
outside and we had plants scattered all over the West coast from Anchorage
to Phoenix so they had to endure temp extremes and lots of wetness. I ended
up working very closely with our label printer manufacturer (Intermec) to
find a thermal transfer label with a very high strength adhesive, a
waterproof/fadeproof top and a special waterproof resin ribbon. I tested by
sticking them to a bunch of panel samples with varying amounts of grease and
baked them in oven, put them in freezer, soaked in water and then left
outside for a couple months and still could read them and not remove them.
It did help to wipe the spot where they were applied with a dry cloth if the
panel was really soaking with lubricant.

So there is label media out there which will stand up to "the worst" but you
would have to consult your printer vendor and experiment a bit.

There are more expensive labels that do not smear or tear off. You need to
talk to a bar code equipment supplier.

Debbie,

Try Micro Warehouse at 800-367-6808 or www.warehouse.com for their Item
#IN7331, 80MM Gun Reader or Item #IN6694, Wasp Bar Code CCD Scanner. These
have "Y" cables, the keyboard connects to the connector and the connector
gets plugged where the keyboard socket. You can program the scanner to
emulate "TAB" or "ENETER" after reading the data. for more information
please visit www.waspbarcode.com.
In your case, in Receipt Entry screen you probably need to type by hand ALT
then "R" then "A" then scan your vendor's ID bar code then program the
scanner to insert TAB twice then scan the vendor's Packing Slip bar code.
After you read the scanner manual you will get better ideas what else you
can do with it. It will help if you try this in Vantage Training first and
write down the sequence of steps which fields and keys are used to create a
Vendor Receipt. Do not use the mouse.

Mike
