To determine the cost effectiveness, you really need to look at what a
program of server consolidation would save the organization. For example,
if you were to be able to consolidate your PDC, BDC, File, Print, email,
groupware, erp, crm, testing, R&D, etc...onto one or two high availability
servers and remove 25-30 servers from your enterprise then it starts to make
economic sense to look at an enterprise class virtualization scheme like
ESX. GSX and Microsoft are really more suited to configuring and deploying
test servers and work very well in that regard.
I would love to give you some numbers on ESX but the hardware requirements
are steep enough that we're choosing to wait until Intel and AMD ship the
CPU's with built in hypervisor support to mitigate performance issues prior
to committing the resources. In the meantime, a VMTN license is an
excellent way to be able to afford to evaluate the potential across all of
the VM products.

I have thought about this and agree with you Michael. However, I am not
sure of the performance hit and whether licensing would be an issue in cost
(would it be cheaper just to have a cheap spare box for emergency versus
licenses for virtualization). I saw GSX being used at Perspectives, and it
was slow and buggy (or maybe that was just the V8 software). I would like
to see some real world numbers on all the Virtualization scenarios (GSX,
ESX, Microsoft, etc.)

Michael,
Why wouldn't you just run 8.0 permanently from the Virtual Server? I
haven't done it, but that was the route I was planning to go. My thinking
is it would be a way to thwart disaster in case of a hardware failure. You
could simply restore the virtual server to another box.

Another option that has yet to be mentioned is to install V8 on your
production V6 system within a Virtual Server from either VMWare, Microsoft,
Topspin or Free VPS. Virtuals are far more cost effective than a hardware
solution and once you have completed your migration, testing, modifications,
etc., all you have to do is transfer the data to the physical box and your
conversion is done.
