We are presently looking at using the project function for a job that needs
a little extra attention. If anyone is using this function, we have several
questions:
Example:
600,000 order 3 units to build
All built at one time
Shipping - 3 due dates (3 seperate months)
30 truck shipments
10 each unit
Payment terms:
20% upon Receipt of material
60% upon each unit shipment
20% at 90 days after shipment
Concerns:
How to setup jobs in project
How will WIP be cleared
Do we set up 3 different jobs against one sales order- one project
Or one job with 30 line items for shipping.

If anyone has any suggestions, we would be most appreciative.

Lori,

Vantage's project function is very flexible, so you shouldn't let the fact
that you're using a project influence your choice of workflow (3 jobs vs.
1). All a project really does is provide a new relationship between jobs
and/or orders that wasn't there before. The project tracker then summarizes
any jobs/orders that share that relationship.

As far as WIP relief is concerned, you don't have to worry about it.
Project affiliation doesn't come into play at all during the WIP
calculation. Each job in a project is still treated as an individual
production run.

We use projects a lot, so let me know if you have more questions.

Warren,

I can't speak for all Vantage users, but for us the magic of projects is
that extra relationship. The fact that we can manage, schedule, and
summarize based not only on an order, job, or customer, but a larger related
group is great for us.

I'll give you one example of how we've used projects and I think you'll see
why we like them so much. Boeing is one of our larger customers, and the
work we do for them is spread across a number of different aircraft /
munitions programs. That being the case, we like to analyze sales /
profitablity not only from a customer standpoint, but from an individual
program standpoint as well.

So, if I want to look at a program, I can't say I want to look at Boeing,
because I'd be looking at everything we do for Boeing. I also wouldn't want
to look at a specific part, because one program might have 100 parts or
more. Grouping these jobs as a project and looking at summary cost /
revenue information in the project tracker is the way we've decided to do
it. I know there are other ways to create subgroups in Vantage (we've tried
creating part classes for specific programs), but between the project
tracker's nice information (costs, revenues, budgets, tasks, and access to
other trackers without leaving project tracker) and the fact that you can
schedule by project (new in 5.0) we decided this was the way to go.
