User Field - Bulk Loading

OK, thanks - I've done .p from buttons I guess - forgot I had one that calculates material based on length/width/gauge and a "factor" and populates main screen. So that part ought to be easy enough. Main worry would be finding "minimum" job date to use to populate the part field. Are these scripts capable of sorting? Or in selecting records are they capable of just retrieving "first" record?

On the other hand I may not need to do this after all. I've figured out how to make a sales report with RB that filters on the minimum job date (pre-pass aggregated) to select only parts where the first job was after a given date. Never used an aggregated value in a filter before.

No problem on the VBFORM thoughts. Interesting ideas. With the customization changes in 6.0/6.1 VBFORM stuff and buttons will be even more powerful.

Scripts meaning the .p (procedure) files, there are examples included with
vantage under your \vantage\vbp folder. Look at CalcShipmentWV.p to learn
some of the syntax. Vantage help shows how to execute from a VBForm Button.
This is basic progress programming, if you are not comfortable with it your
macro/manual metheds may be the way to go.

Thanks Patrick but I'm lost...what kind of "script"? I'm not super familiar
even with Access or VBFORM buttons for that matter and I'm not sure what a
"script" is. Thanks, -Todd C.

I have a theory I would like to add.

It appears to me if you create a script that is ran with a VBFORM button
doesn't this utilize the database write triggers? My tests show that if I
create a script to change the NEEDBY dates by subtracting off the transit
time on order releases and run the script with a VBFORM button. The order
change log picks up the changes, so I figure the write triggers are getting
utilized.

So in your case Todd create the script with a VBFORM Button, put it on the
VBFORMs say under the company table where no one else can get to it, see if
each part change is captured in the change log, you will have to add the
VBFORM field to the change log in version 5.2 or higher. You will not skip
the write triggers and also log the event.

What do you think?

OK, I know it is a big no-no but is there much (or any) danger in using
Access and ODBC to bulk load user fields? These are not otherwise validated
anywhere and I don't think would involve any triggers issues (right?). What
I would like to do is update the Date3 field on the Part table with the
earliest job booked date (also a user field on JobHead). New sales
compensation plan for 2004 and beyond is for sales people to "own" parts and
get credit for sales for four years from the first job booking date for the
part. New parts will have this entered but I would like to update Part
table for all existing parts rather than have to have someone enter them.

Or, I have Ground Control but have never used it. Would the safety of using
that outweigh the learning curve? I would have to create some sort of set
of commands from an RB report right?

Thanks in advance for any opinions or suggestions.

Also I did mention to Epicor at perspectives there is possible a missing
revenue stream for them. It would be nice if I could write a couple of pages
of code for a .p procedure to be run from a VBFORM button. Be able to send
it to epicor for a flat rate of $100 per page. Have them say 1) looks OK,
you should not damage your database by doing this. 2) optionally show some
improvements or better syntax to the code.

Would this be something others would be interested in?
Todd, sorry to steal your thread for my own purposes. VBFORM seems to be
highly under utilized in my opinion.
