We are using a Perl script running on our server that exports our
packing slips ship to info to a csv file every 5 minutes and the
Worldship software read those address and pulls the address in when the
shipper scans the Packing Number barcode. I'm still working on a better
method of writing the tracking number back to Vantage. I currently run
a Perl Script on night that writes the tracking number back into
Vantage. I would like it to write back immediately, if anyone else is
doing this please let me know.

I have a Crystal Report that exports all my sales orders to a csv. My
Worldship points to the csv file and my shipping team uses the keyed
import
function of worldship to pull in the shipto addresses and info based on
our
sales order number.

You can contact me offline at dmusgrave@... if you have more

I searched the archives and found a thread from June 24 & 25, 2002 on
this subject. I am revisiting in hopes of updated or additional
information, and I have some specific questions. We are looking at
attaching the UPS computer to the network in order to bring the UPS
tracking information into Vantage, and also to use Vantage's customer
table in UPS to avoid double entry. It sounds like this can be done
a few different ways, whether manual (import/export)or automated. We
are on v 5.00.329. I am interested in knowing just how much can be
accomplished with no custom programming as well as what custom
programs are available. I would also like to know how much of a load
to expect on the system and additional space needed (our db is
currently 2.5 gb, NT4, 500mhz, dual processor, smart array
controller, RAID 10, 512k RAM, 100 mhz ethernet, 50 users).
According to the previous threads, v 5.1 actually has a tracking
number field available. Is this an empty field that you could import
this UPS tracking information to? How to do? I have no experience
with the ODBC driver, but am under the impression that it came with
5.0 and works well. How would I set this up to use? We have a dual
processor on our NT4 server. It seems like I read somewhere that in
order to use ODBC, you would have to give up the use of the second
processor - possibly due to configurations/settings. Anybody heard
of such a thing? Would it be advisable to wait until we upgrade to
5.1? Does 5.2 have anything worth waiting for? I appreciate all
input, on or off-line. Thank you!! Ann Harrell, AMFAB, 574-264-2190
Unless Epicor has changed its philosophy on "importing" there is no
"sanctioned" way to import except in BOM. Export is no problem, you have a
couple of different routes for that. If you have a high volume of tracking
numbers to enter you could try one of the macro programs. I think all of us
out there would like to be able to bring in data from outside programs. Its
too bad we have that CONSTRAINT because A LOT OF USERS WOULD LIKE TO DO
THAT. (*epicorian hint*)
I have world ship on the network but we have half the users and our
server is X 2 yours. Theres no noticable difference.

We are seeing some greatly enhanced UPS (and other shipper) connectivity in
5.20.210. In Customer Shipment Tracker there is a "Track" button which will
link the 1Zxxxxxxxxxxxx UPS tracking number to their web site's tracking
page and display the status. If the tracking number was entered on the
shipment Vantage appends it to the proper URL string (which you have to
setup) and bang! the status screen for the shipement. I have not walked
this all the way thru yet but it looks pretty easy to setup. We are very
much looking forward to using this Live.

That feature was also available in 5.1. We've been using the tracking
feature for some time. It works with anyone with a web site that's set up
right. I have UPS, FedEx, and about a half dozen freight lines set up.
It's cut and paste or type it in. I hope in 5.2 it can grab it from the
ups or fed site without having to retype or cut and paste.

OK, thanks, that's what happens, I guess, when you skip a couple
intermediate versions, everything's new in 5.20. Maybe there is hope then
that the coming features Nancy mentioned in the 5.20 webinar as being
available in 5.20 are better yet.

While this is a great start, without an automated means to get the tracking
numbers into the field it is useless to us since we ship hundreds of
packages a day UPS. We also may have several tracking numbers for each line
item or part number on a PS. BUT it's a start!!

My 2 cents, for what its worth.

Robert,

What are the other freight lines you have listed? And would you please
include the URL's you are using for Vantage. UPS has been no problem as
well as FedEx. Yellow and CCX have been intermittent.

Now perhaps I exaggerated somewhat. Really CCX is the other critical
shipper. I called the shipping manager this morning and he was just pulling
my leg yesterday. Actually in retrospect, it was kind of funny, he grabbed
a bunch of junk mail packets and explained these were "a few" of the
carriers we used. I was on autopilot yesterday and didn't even question why
we would use so many different carriers.
Thanks for your help with Yellow and in advance for any effort to find CCX.

I have read the reply post and I don't know if you found got the
answer you were looking yet, but I use a small 4GL program I wrote to
update the tracking# field in Vantage every night just before the
email app I wrote sends shipment confirmations to all our customers
with that tracking number. Vantage doesn't have any import tools and
will not support updates to the database through non-vantage code,
but I have saved a ton of time using my own apps and haven't had a
problem yet. Not recommend for non-programmers. Also I would not
recommend using the ODBC for updating the database. It is true that
the latest drivers are much improved, but it will never beat a native
4GL connection.

The shipping modules from Vantage are supposed to provide this
functionality. I have Express Ship but have not got it fully installed yet.
That's my problem not a comment about Express Ship. Other priorities got in
the way.

Doesn't answer your question, but it is an alternative if ODBC doesn't work
out.
