Upgrading Vantage from version 6.1 to 9.05

If you are doing a migration instead of an upgrade, then there is nothing
for Epicor to convert.

Thank you very much Patrick, Ned and Edward. I will do what you are
suggesting and let Epicor convert my data and will do migration instead of
upgrade.

Greetings Vantage Gurus,

We are still on 6.1. I was holding off as long as I could but I am
finally ready to take the plunge to Vantage 9.05.700. For the time
being I will do it only on one machine for test/training purposes. I
was told that I have to install each version and convert data base to
each version. However, do I need to go through all patches and upgrades
in each version? Is there any shortcut that would speed the process up?

Thanks a lot for any helpful hints!

You can work with Epicor Consulting, send them your DB, they convert it
and send back.

Less expensive than all the time you will spend setting a conversion pc
and figuring it out yourself.

If you haven't purchased a new server yet just buy a PC with a solid
state drive you can run 1 user with that to take a look around at the
new stuff.

You can do it yourself versus paying.

The only cost if you do it yourself is your time, but you can usually set it
to run and walk away for a while and then come back.

You would want to update from 6.1 to 8.0, then 8.03.400, then 9.04, then
9.05. You only need to run the process with the most recent service pack
installed for each version, and you can put all of them on the same machine.
9.04 and 9.05 are both done with the DUU with 9.05, but you do need a
license and the install media for all of them.

However, I would like to say that the majority of people don't actually
upgrade, or at least when they finally go live they don't end up upgrading,
they end up migrating instead.

There are massive changes in so many different pieces of the program, and
much like the telephone game from when you are a kid, every level of change
means things get distorted a little bit differently. I would suggest looking
at the whole situation and take a guess at how much time it will take you to
upgrade and fix all your broken things, versus just doing a migration which
is essentially a new implementation, and then you can also use it as an
opportunity to cleanse your data, so you end up with a much cleaner database
when done.

I would treat this as a new install. There are significant fundability and
database schema changes.

For testing, if you want to use your data, I don't think there are any shortcuts. If you follow the guides & do it yourself it will probably take a couple of days.
The biggest changes I noticed
- From 6 to 8 is resources and resource groups
- From 8 to 9 is UOMs and financials

You might want to do a fresh install & use the training database too.

I do like using my own data for testing only.
Beyond that I agree with the other posts, that it is better to migrate than upgrade. Thaink about having Epicor convert your data or getting the DMT.

Is there a guide for migration best practices? For instance what data
is best to be migrated and any tools to facilitate?

I've never seen anything for "best practices", just the basic upgrade guides from Epicor.
>>and any tools to facilitate?
Check out the Data Migration Tool (DMT), you'll probably need to talk with your CAM if you haven't already.
