Maybe I can answer my own question, Once I set up a new Installation on a temp Server, I should create backups of my four datasets (Production, Training,Pilot, & Test) (d:\epicor\mfgsys803) and then on the new server do a restore?

You're absolutely right. Don't touch your live server until you're actually ready to upgrade your live environment.

You need to setup a second server, install your current version (or the next one up) on it and start the upgrade process there.

If you're not virtualized and don't have a second server laying around, you can get by with a VM on your workstation. Performance won't be as good, but as long as your have a decent workstation, it should be workable. A VM will also give you snap shot capabilities and easy cloning, which will be super useful.

If you go this route, grab an SSD for 50-100$, stick that in your box and store the VM there. That should give you plenty of IO (which will likely be your only real concern, performance wise) to ensure conversions don't take forever to run.

Once you have that setup, just take a clone of the VM after installing each 'milestone' version. In the end you should have 8.03, 9, .05 and 10 virtual machines. At this point you can run your DB through each VM like a nice little assembly line until you get all the kinks worked out of your upgrade process.

Once you're comfortable with the upgrade, setup your E10 box, run your current DB through your 'assembly line' and put it into production.

Obviously, I've glossed over most of the detail, but that's the basic process.

Vista/Progress question here on Upgrading: we are heading down the long road to upgrading to V.10, but before any of that we need to get our current system which is 8.03.406b up to the latest service pack. I want start by applying this service Pack to our Test database and so in reading the Installation Guide, it says to Stop all the Appservers and the database, and I can do that for the TEST data. but the part I'm hung up on is that in section 2.3 of the guide, it says to install the Service Pack in the mfgsys803 & oe101b directories?

If I do this, wont this affect my "LIVE" installation? I want to be sure I can test this before moving forward with touching anything of our Live data.

Yes I've backed up the Database & system files as well as any custom reports.

Maybe I can answer my own question, Once I set up a new Installation on a temp Server, I should create backups of my four datasets (Production, Training,Pilot, & Test) (d:\epicor\mfgsys803) and then on the new server do a restore?

A VM will also give you snap shot capabilities and easy cloning, which will be super useful. &nbsp;</div><div>If you go this route, grab an SSD for 50-100$, stick that in your box and store the VM there. setup, just take a clone of the VM after installing each 'milestone' version.

Obviously, I've glossed over most of the detail, but that's the basic process.

yes, though I wouldn't bother doing them all.. Just pick one and do your thing with it. No need for all that conversions and crazy things.

<div dir="ltr">You&#39;re absolutely right. Performance won&#39;t be as good, but as long as your have a decent workstation, it should be workable. A VM will also give you snap shot capabilities and easy cloning, which will be super useful.  </div><div>If you go this route, grab an SSD for 50-100$, stick that in your box and store the VM there. That should give you plenty of IO (which will likely be your only real concern, performance wise) to ensure conversions don&#39;t take forever to run.</div><div><br clear="none"></div><div>Once you have that

setup, just take a clone of the VM after installing each 'milestone' version.

Obviously, I've glossed over most of the detail, but that's the basic process.Â
