Updating Windows server running Epicor 10.2.400

Good Afternoon,

I work in the IT Dept. of the parent company of a firm that has Epicor 10.2.400 running on some long outdated server hardware. Until recently this company was hands off for us but that has changed and we need to bring them into compliance with our policies now.

The firm is running the previously mentioned version on a bare metal Windows Server 2008. There are a couple of other IIS servers being used with their Epicor system as well. All their servers are 2008.

We plan to get their server versions up to date on some new VMWare hosts and decommission their old bare metal servers.

My question is if we can deploy the same version of Epicor on the new Windows servers or does Epicor have to be updated to run on the new versions of Win Server. Their time on Epicor may be coming to and end soon as corporately we use another ERP platform. So I would hope to not have to spend on Epicor updates if we do not have to at this point.

We have available licenses of Server 2016 & 2019 that we could use if we have to just to get them back into an environment that can receive security patches. We can also use newer versions but we just want them off of 2008 as quickly as possible.

Thanks for any advice.

@bparkin Welcome. 10.2.400 can run on 2016 and probably even 2019. Is the server running IIS and SQL or are they separate?

I would probably p2v the server with a temp server name and then in place upgrade it to 2016 and test it all out.

Then after it is tested flip the IPs and name from the old server restore the current 10.2.400 database.

This makes it all look the same and you do not have to redeploy the clients.

Hi Greg,

Their environment is definitely multiple servers. I was just rechecking their servers. There is one they identified as companyname-ERP. Another server got named EpicV10 and a third is an IIS server. I believe the third one is an IIS box that runs a system I was told was developed inhouse to access Epicor and provide a pretty interface for their people (called Visual Factory).

The companies Admin retired a few weeks ago and suddenly looking after their IT fell in our laps. We don’t mind, but since we were held at arms length for ages, we know nearly nothing about their system… only that the servers are all out of date. They do pay a fee for their Epicor system yearly so we are assuming that will get us someone to talk to as we start the change process there.

We were hung up trying to figure out how far we could update them without running into issues. The in place upgrade after a P2V was something we were pondering. It will be good to get them up to date and not a security issue in our environment.

Thanks,

Brent

Just ask the CAM to get you the latest version of windows server that can host 10.2.400. I know that 2019 is the server that can host 10.2.500.

@utaylor Good point. I looked at the 10.2.400 install guide which you can get from EpicWeb and Server 2019 with SQL 2017 is in the list.

In the Epicor Admin Console you can see the IIS server and the db server.

All good advice and using the install guide for 10.2.400 is a master stroke… That will give you the “certified” version.

I wouldn’t be too worried about the E10 part, but the other website that’s a whole other story, who knows what surprises you will come across.

May want to consider your database compatibility level though.

As always…

Test, test, test.
