UOM Blank Title 102064

My company has the same problem. In Vantage 8.03 we use CS and PK for any number of warehouse supplies, but we have the Per Container field in 8.03. In E9.05 we plan to use new UOM ids such as CS6, CS12, etc. The big problem is getting existing item master data converted to the new format.

It seems as though V8.03 to E9 conversion admin tools (step 9,800 in the Run Conversion Program option)allows for creating new E9 UOMs during schema PassThru. Our preliminary plan is to develop new Classes and UOMs and apply the UOMs in E8.03 then create the new Classes and UOMs in E9 during schema PassThru and let the data conversion proceed as normal.

Has anyone else considered this option? Does anyone know of any issues with this process?

Best Regards,
Gibson

Rich,

We're on 9.04.506C, and I called support on this issue. What they told me was once the Inventory UOM is chosen and the part record is saved, the UOM cannot be changed. Both the Sales and Purchasing UOM values can be changed to make it act differently on POs and SOs, but the Inventory UOM is fixed forever. E9 is significantly more picky on UOM than Vantage/Vista used to be (which in most cases is a GREAT thing, as it really sucked there).

If anybody has any different experience, please let me know too!

I believe you can if no inventory and no transactions. Otherwise, no, so be careful when you set it. The biggest problem is serialized parts must use a UM without decimals. So if they use something like EA and other non-serialized parts that need decimals also use EA, you have to change one of them to something else.

Good Day Rich:

No. There is no way to change it. You have to create a new number.

Also, 7 months after going live, we may have just discovered why
making all UOMClass entries " Part Specific" was not a good idea. The
DMT tool created close to 4 million PartUOM records ( 280,000+ part
numbers times 12 UOM), even though most have only one or two UOM's with
a non-zero multiplier. But if not part specific, then Bag= 50 EA for
ALL part#'s.

But you can have UOM conversions at the Vendor\Part level. I still
do not know what the correct answer is, but fortunately the 4 million
records do not seem to be slowing down the system.

If you use good naming conventions, you should be able to handle the
different bag sizes, using Len's example. For example, you can have code
BG50 for Bag = 50 EA, BG25 for Bag = 25 EA, etc..

Good Day Kevin:

Yes, I think that would be bettter, but still needs some thought.
Might get tricky with limitation in the number of charaters
available for the UOM#; also, for other 'Conversions" like length of a
bar.
Like I said, there was a lot of confusion and Purchasing\Production
told me they would rather set that up at the Vendor level. From there,
we ended up with 'Part Specific".

Well, the important thing is that in most places, you don't see the code.
So, you could technically have "Bag of 50" be code 0001, and "Bag of 25" be
code 0547, and it would likely have little impact on the system.

Good Day Kevin:

I agree, but on some screens, that you cannot change, maybe only the
Code ( 6 characters) is displayed, and you cannot add the description to
the Screen\Grid\Report.

I was not disagreeing, just trying to suggest a careful plan before
he creates ANY; for example, will your 'Bar" 'base' unit be Inches or
feet? A 10 Foot bar is 120 Inches, but a 9.5 foot bar is 009.500 so
what is the code: 009500? Or BR0095 ( round to last digit), or BA0095
Or B00113. Would you, instead, want to use B or BA for Bag? or BR for
barge?
"Intelligent" Codes always gets very complicated, so your back to
adding the UOM-Description to the Screens\Dashboard\Grids, etc.

PS: for fun: My spell checker told me I spelled intelligent
wrong.
I can almost hear it thinking " You Carbon-Based
idiot, you can't even spell intelligent".
And it probably wanted to use the "Sarcastic"
font that has been suggested.
