Unapproved Part Rev's

If all you want is to unapprove revisions, there is no need to check out the part in Engineering Workbench. You can do so directly from the Part Maintenance by unchecking the approved box on the revision tab.

We're on Vantage 8.00 so maybe something changed on your later version but the "Undo Check Out" action works to remove the revision from the Engineering Workbench group without approving it.

All that said, I would say that best practice would be to keep the revision in the workbench group until it's completed. This gives a solid work queue for the engineer to follow. If more than one engineer is working on the same revision, you can share the group by unchecking the "Single User" option on the group.

We are on version 8.03.408B and have an issue that when you pull a
Part/Rev into engineering workbench, you have to approve the Rev when
you move the part back out of engineering workbench. I contacted Epicor
and was informed that this issue was previously reported, see below.

Two questions, 1st how do others deal with unapproved part/rev's? We
currently move them out of engineering workbench and unapprove them, so
we may have for example 4 unapproved revs and 1 approved rev for a
particular part. We do not leave them in a workbench group as suggested
below!

2nd question is has anyone already written a BPM as per development
notes below to unapprove a revision after it has been checked in?

Summary: ENH ENG would like to check in a part with a revision that

is unapproved.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

SOFTWARE AND DATABASE INFO

Vantage

Business Reason for Request:

Vantage doesn't follow the same logic that PDM systems employ.

With PDM, users can check out (only one user can check out at a time)
numerous times to add or modify without having to approve.

When the process is complete it is approved.

Typically a part/assembly doesn't get approved until it is completely
finished.

The logic Vantage employs is backwards to PDM industry.

Suggested Enhancement:

Have an option of whether to require approval of the revision before
checking the part in.

VERSION NUMBER

8.03.404A

RESPONSE FROM DEVELOPMENT

Typically users would leave the part checked out if they did not want it
to be used or approved.

The user could also go in and manually un-approve it.

9x enh meeting:

This will not be considered at this time.

Typically users would leave the part checked out if they did not want it

Another option is to create a BPM to go in and unapprove the revision

I would also like to ask a follow-up question to this:

When working with Alternate methods why does Vantage automatically create new revs for any sub-assembly parts - where the sub-assembly rev number matches the top level?

We may have a top level at Rev 0, but the sub-assemblies (which already have approved alternate method revs) each may be any number.
