TT5 barcode scanning terminals

If I can make one more comment/question: don't the TT5's store info and
then release it back to the server/Vantage? If that is the case, the cheapo
data collection stations (which we have used since the beginning) is a
better idea because your info in job tracker is REAL TIME, as opposed to
waiting for the information to be transmitted back through the TT5. Just a
thought. Also, users are really good with the keyboard and mouse these
days.

Hello All, this is my first post, so please be gentle :-)

Can anyone expand on this subject ?? We're looking into labor data
collection through TT5 terminals or computer terminals (oldschool -
keyboard and mouse). I would be grateful for your input on the
subject, so we can resolve the little discussion we have internally
:-). Which is the "better", a simple for and against comparison would
be nice :-)

We have been using data collection now for 10 years or more. Not all on
Vantage. However, we started out with barcode scanning pens. A lot of miss
reads, employees had to hold the pens just right in order for the scan to
pick up the correct data. Very frustrating for employees. When we moved to
Vantage we purchased touch screen monitors, which again you had to use a
light pen to touch the screen. Again if you didn't hold the pen just right
it would not enter the information. I saw employees banging on the monitor
screen with the pen out of frustration! Finally, and where we are at now,
we switched all our data collection stations to key board and mouse.
Employees have become very proficient, now I'm not saying we don't have
errors, but most errors are cause by operator error not equipment error,
which is an easier scenario to correct. I would say 90% of employees make
less than 5 errors a year. The other 10% are usually new employees who just
need a little more time to come up to speed.

How could you post such a topic!! You should be ashamed of yourself.

Only kidding.

We use touch screen monitors for shop data collection. It works ok. A little slow, but it works. It keeps the mouse and keyboard at bay. In effect, it keeps the honest, honest.

My vote would be:

Use Thin Clients on the shop floor with monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Match
them up with cheap PC's running XP-Pro in your computer room or anywhere
else in your office area. Use the built in RDP protocol to connect the thin
clients with the PC's. Fast, cheap, and very flexible.

Thin clients should run you about $ 300-350 each. Cheap PC's are whatever
you can find that run's XP-Pro.

Great part about this is that your PC's are in a clean environment where
they aren't sucking up 5 lbs of shop dust every day. Thin clients are
usually sealed boxes and are fairly indestructible. Plain old 15" monitors
are cheap and last just about forever. Mice are cheap - you can buy the new
optical mice for about $ 17 - maybe less.

If you have a really nasty shop floor situation you might want to look at "
The Virtually Indestructible Keyboard" by Grandtec. It's a totally sealed
keyboard that you can roll up if you want. These are also nice for laptop
computers on the road when you want a full size keyboard. (
http://grandtec.com/vik.htm <http://grandtec.com/vik.htm> )

This approach avoids:

* Windows Terminal Server
* Custom cabinets to try and protect PC's on the shop floor
* Touch screens - Over the years on the list they have gotten mixed reviews
and they're not cheap
* TT5 terminals have also not been treated nicely on this list. I've heard
from a number of people who have tried them and then dumped them. If you
really want to pursue TT5's you might trying posting to the list to see if
anyone has any that they want to sell.

Depending on the number of shop floor PC's you are trying to support you
might also want to take a look at HP's new PC Blade Servers. Single cabinet
( $ 3,000 ) will hold 20 blades ( $ 700/e ) and each can be controlled with
a thin client from the floor. If you only have 1-8 shop floor PC's I'd just
go buy small form factor PC's with matching thin clients and be done with
it.

One last note - you can buy thin clients in a number of configurations -
with or without CD's/Floppy's ( I'd vote NOT ) and also as touch screens or
??? Check out HP, WYSE, NEOWARE ( Makes units for IBM ), or Televideo.

Good Luck -

Todd Anderson

Todd,

If you need more thin clients contact Dan Spoerl at Toledo Metal Spinning via this board - he's a good friend of mine as everyone on this board knows !!!

TMS has a cabinet full of IBM Win Terminals that might be available for sale.

I haven't seen TT5 units discussed here in ages. We tried them years ago
and I found them a pain. We wound up with terminal server and dumb
terminals (much better) If you do go with TT5's I have a couple of units
I'll sell cheap, but I'd feel like I was selling swamp land in Florida.
