Speaking of Tool Crib, I was wondering how others number their tooling
in Vantage? For example, we have literally hundreds of different
endmills that we stock and even more that we purchase for a specific
job. Originally, these were entered into the system using manufacturer
part#, but when we switch manufacturers this becomes an issue as we
have to inactivate that number and create a new one - causing more work
and losing traceability. So, we've been re-thinking this. We are
looking into smart Part#'s, but because of all the details of the mills
that differentiate them, these numbers are getting very long and
complex and seem maybe not the best way to go. I'm just curios how
others are solving this issue?

Hello All

I would like to know if anyone uses Vantage to keep track of inventory in
the tool crib? We are thinking of trying to use it. But I would like to
know how to set it up. I want to keep track of consumable tooling such as
drill bits and inserts so we don't run out. We don't charge consumable
tooling to jobs because it is figured in the overhead. Some of the tools
used are left in the machines and run multiple jobs until they need
resharpening. We would also like to keep track of how many times drills are
resharpened. I know there are tool crib softwares out there but I would like
to use Vantage so we can us requisitions and purchase orders, no sense in
doing double entries.

If anyone has done this or has a procedure to do set it up please reply or
feel free to call me and discuss it.

I can't say we are even in the start up phase, but I would be interested in
how you have set this up and any pitfalls to watch for. We would like to

I have been working on this for a year now. I have entered part numbers for
everything and we are purchasing new product under these numbers so I'm
generating a purchasing history. I cycle count quarterly and have some
general onhand balance totals. I have created BOM's but have only started
issues and returns on a couple of items. Tracking Items UP and Down the BOM
in Part Tracker works well. One pitfall I have found is the BOM Qty Per
Parent field limited to 5 decimal places. (I could live with 8 would like
12) So if you have any tool life beyond 100,000 you will be stuck when you
want do a TimePhase for demand. You will have to add procedures for your
production people to change the tooling BOM when work centers or machines
change. Phantom parts or a Phantom BOM level as I call it work well for
this. I have also create an 8 level generic BOM report for Vantage version 5
in report builder and it's available for downloads at yahoo. Anyone care to
discuss how to create a Tooling BOM for a multi-station cold header?
