Time Out Program

We're using Podlin's utility, works great. For accounting,
purchasing and other power users, I just setup a Vantage icon that
did not use the timeout utility. Everybody else gets it. I started
with 15 minutes and got many complaints. Its set for 45 minutes now
and everybody seems to be happy.

We had one user start an activity in data collection and then left
the job entry screen open for 45+ minutes. It logged her into a job
operation 0 that did not exist in the job. We had to use the
endact4.r program from Vantage tech support to kill the activity. It
didn't, however, charge any time to the job. Other than that we've
had no problems with it. When we upgraded to 5.0 we had to purchase
the 5.0 version.

We're running Vantage 4.0 and have finally decided to purchase a time
out feature. We've gotten tired of running around our building
asking "Are you in, can you get out?" and we don't want to purchase
more licenses at this time.

I know many of you prefer Mike Podlin's program, and I believe I
remember reading there's one from Caesar Development.

Can anyone give me any information as to what is the preferred method
of timing out users?

Thanks for your help.

I've only used the one from Mike Podlin. It is wonderful. It only allows
one vantage session per machine and you can set whatever timeout limit you
want. Also, the configs can be customized by Pc for power users. And, the
price is right. It has most definitely saved us from purchasing additional
licenses.

Which is essentially why it is not a standard feature in Vantage....

I agree with Sarah. It's fairly easy to configure too! I don't know what we did without his timeout utility!

Judy - thanks for your prompt reply. Can you let me have Mike's e-mail
address? The only attachment that came with your reply was Caesar info. I'm
just finishing for the day (it's 5.45pm here) but I'll be in bright eyed and
bushy tailed first thing tomorrow, and I'd love to follow up on the time out
stuff. (I'm thinking about your boy.)

Love, Carole

Hi Sarah,

We began researching Mike Podlin's timeout utility, but to my
understanding, it will dump you even if you are in the middle of a
transaction. Is that true, and if so, what problems have you found with
that?

With the Progress Timeout, we found that our accounting department could be taking 45 to 50 minutes to create a Group in AR (or AP) and if the Client TimeOut kicked in, even if they were still working, it would kick them out. Apparently, it considers "screens" changing as 'activity', not just keystrokes on the keyboard or mouse.

On Mike's routine, we've gotten kicked out of an AR Group, (only if the user left the computer for too long), and Vantage left bad recID's in the ARInvHed. Then we are unable to post the Group. We've learned to make sure we don't leave the computer in the middle of an AR Group Edit.

To my knowledge, we have not had this issue in the year we've been using
Mike's utility, believe it or not. Our users are very good at completing
transactions before leaving their Pc's. Our problem users were the ones who
would start Vantage first thing in the morning, and leaving it sitting open
all day, even if they only used it for a total of an hour a day.

We have had some complaints from people that left their Vantage session idle
for 15 minutes then come back and start entering an order, then suddenly
getting kicked out of the system. The program seems to track window
activity (opening, closing) rather than keystrokes. Fortunately, Vantage is
good about rolling back partial entries. The data isn't saved until you hit
okay, but once a form is saved - getting kicked out of the application
doesn't loose that data.

In our implementation of the program, we made the policy that all data entry
personell who's sole job description it is to enter data into vantage would
not be timed out. Because half of our user-base consisted of users that
were only using trackers, we timed them out, and that fixed our licensing
problem.
