Test Server Setup

Pam,

When you say "moved our production databases and installation" do you mean you just moved the directories? If so, then yes you will have problems. We recommend a fresh installation to get the necessary registry information registered and then if you need to, move over the directories. Caution in doing this though, you will need to make sure your versions of both OpenEdge and Vantage are exactly the same on both servers prior to moving them. After that you can change the .mfgsys files and go from there.

Unfortunately, this is the bottom line issue when moving servers. If you have customized any reports (i.e. gone through the native ODBC instead of using Vantage) then you will need to modify all reports. Also, we have seen in some instances where custom code has the UNC path associated with it and every line of code has to be changed. This could be done easier with a global variable set to the server name - although I'm not a programmer, so I don't know if this is actually possible - seems logical though.

As far as the Sonic and stuff, I'm not familiar enough with these applications to talk about them.

We are setting up a virtual test server. We copied our live/production databases and installation over to the new test server. The problem is there are a lot of pointers that point back to our original server and databases. Since it's virtual, we think we're hitting our test server, but in reality we're hitting our live database. Epicor told us we should do a complete new installation. Has anyone else successfully copied their virtual server over and set up a test server, or have a list of pointers or url's that need changed? I'm worried we'll miss something and point to our live database. We're using Sonic, Insite manifest, Tax connect, and a lot of the 3rd party software. I'd appreciate any help, or if there's a better way to set this up, I'm open to it.

Thanks,
Pam Klein
No real good solution... Sonic and some of the other products make it tough
to do because of how they communicate.

Personally I would try to trim down what you NEED in your test environment,
or find a way to completely segregate it from the rest of your system by
putting it in a closed environment via seperate VLAN or something else.

I would agree with Ned. It will be very difficult to get everything moved over and the easiest way at first is to cut down on the number of applications you are testing. Regardless, you should, in this case, segment off a separate LAN. If room permits, create a training area with your server and a few stations that you could use for testing and then in the future you could use for additional training.

You could also create a fresh install of Vantage and then restore the database as it does not have any pointers to the server kept in the DB files.

If you have any custom code or reports that specifically run have the UNC path in it you will have to modify those too.

Good luck.

I ran into the same thing, so I set up sql scripts to change the entries in the database specific to the server name. I have these scripts run after the automatic live backup then test restore.
