Sudden Performance Slowdown - E9 SQL Environment

None since then, still at 504C. I regularly clean out the folders but let me look again

How many service packs have you put on since then?

Any thought that excess folders in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Epicor directory might be causing some slowdown when
it kicks up?

After running well for about 9 months, Banner screen now takes about 16
seconds to appear and another 10 seconds for system monitor. This is logging
in right on the server with no users logged on.

Ran Disable Locking on SQL 2005. Progress Databases are set to read only.
Only thing added last several weeks was Indexing, mainly to do Case Entry
boolean searches

Anyone else see something similar and what might be causing? Log files from
server and SQL sent to Epicor, nothing obvious at this point

We are not on E9, but 8.03.408B SQL....we notice
a similar phenomena and associate it with a "runaway APP Server".

We delete the abandoned App server(s) and
everything returns to normal response time.

Our first telltale in IT is a watch we keep on
the % resources being used on each core of the
server. We have the equipment pretty well
calibrated and know when the Task Manager
Schedule drives the usage up. If we see a core
at 100% and it's staying there we look through
Task manager processes for an abandoned App
server. The App server associated with the core
is usually the orphan. We check the PID's of all
app servers to confirm that the suspect is in
fact detached from Open Edge. We then delete the
orphaned PID/App server using Task Manager.

If left unattended the whole system gradually grinds to a halt.

Happens about once every 5 or 6 weeks.

I stop and start my Vantage processserver and taskagent appservers nightly.

e.g.

@echo off
set DLC=C:\Epicor\OE101B
set PATH=%DLC%\BIN;%PATH%
set LIB=%DLC%\LIB;%LIB%
rem C:
echo .
echo .
echo STOPPING MfgSys803 ProcessServer and TaskAgent...
rem cd \Epicor\MfgSys803\db
call asbman -name MfgSys803ProcessServer -stop
call asbman -name MfgSys803TaskAgent -stop

I don't restart the main appserver, but you could do this as well. Be sure you schedule this so it doesn't interfere with nightly scheduled tasks (e.g. MRP).

Thanks Rob, this is what I suspected, but could not confirm, all along. How do you know if there is an "orphan" app server?

Thanks Brian. I've been starting and stopping, sometimes multiple times a day. Have even done a hard shut down and no difference. Have you also seen where an appserver will not shut down without killing the process?
