Strange Things on Network - Can't Change Printers

Does the printer service on the server (we have two, which one?) affect when a Win98 user "shares" a printer? Or is there something running on the "host" PC that controls whether people on other PCs can run the "Printers" control screen? I have just completed re-installing Win98 on the host PC and it seems to be working OK but anyone defaulted to the printer on that PC can still not run the Printer control. My next step is to have them reboot in case there is some network conenction that is messed up from before the re-install. But if there is something on the server messing things up I'd be happy to give it a try.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Start with stopping and restarting the printer service on your server.

I have some really strange issues on our network this morning that have
completely baffled me and are now affecting Vantage. It started when a
Win98 person sharing a laser printer could not print or even bring up the
"change printers" screen. Continual BSOD even after rebooting. Then the
people adjacent to him (also Win98) who probably had that printer set as
default could not change their default printer. It is like Spool32 will not
run. I've seen something like this before and resetting the network switch
they are on fixed it but not this time. I ran a bunch of virus scans
(nothing) and system checkers and all seems OK but nobody can print or
change printer. I am in process of re-installing Win98se on the PC that
serves the printer. But at the moment I can't figure out why that PC being
down is affecting all the others ability to run Printers screen.

Any clues where to start looking would be very much appreciated.

I use APC - 1000va or greater. One for each server and one for the
switches. That gives me plenty of time for auto or manual shutdowns when it
happens - and the longer battery time increases the chance that the power
will come on before the battery runs out. Separate circuits for each too -
isolates the problem if it occurs. Phone system and remote switches are on
smaller UPS units for the power conditioning and a little bit of continuity.
