Paul,
You can restore the new drive to the exact way it was on the old drive by
creating an image file to restore it from.
Products like Symantec's Ghost will do this.

I have had great success with a free alternative to Ghost, DriveImage XML,
http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm <http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm>

Works best when you create a Bart PE disk to boot from.
