Seems strange to me, to here how loud cpu fans, etc... are. I remember
the
days well of sitting in a computer room running multiple dot matrix
printers, you could not use the phone at the same time.

Dina,
This may be a little extravagant, but I'll explain a situation we had
and the solution we used. We had a server room location in a room
just off the MIS Admin's office with its own door. We had several
servers on a rackmount and one Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard hooked up with
a switch. The server room had lots of A/C and venting to keep it
nice and cool. In fact it was almost too cool in there to work for
any length of time without long sleeves. It was also noisy in there,
and to top it off there was a sprinkler over head in case of fire.
While doing some disaster planning my boss realize that it wasn't too
safe to have the sprinkler in the server room for obvious reasons,
but found out it was required to be there by law? Our solution was
to build a little plexiglass enclosure with sliding doors around the
rack mount. The cold air is pumped into and vented out of the
enclosure through the ceiling and one of the regular walls. Our
maintenance dept built it themselves. It has helped with the noise,
temperature, and eliminated the danger from the water. If you'd like
more details on how they built it, or what it cost let me know, and
I'll find out for you.
