Solid State Drives

I have received an email from one of the Vantage 3rd party consultants who
sells Solid State Disk devices and has experience with implementation
regarding Vantage DB's. If you are interested in pursuing this technology
please post an email TO the list and the consultant can then contact you OFF
LIST.

The consultant also tells me that they sell below list ...

---------------

This is one of those interesting philosophical debates ... how can 3rd party
consultants make us aware of what they have to offer if we don't allow
advertising on the list ....

Oh well, today it translates into my just posting a msg saying that there is
a consulting company/vendor who does sell this stuff WITHOUT posting their
name ...

Hopefully this doesn't offend anyone.

I followed the string on Solid State drives last week and that got me to
thinking that it might be useful to use. I thought I would share what I
have observed so far.

We purchased a new dual Zeon 2.8 Motherboard with 2GB RamBus and a 4GB
Ramdrive from Cenatek.com.

We installed Vantage and Progress on the new ramdrive.

Conversion from 5.1 to 5.2 took 4 minutes on a 600mb database. I have no
previous conversion times to compare this to for 5.2.

It took 33 sec to run capture. Normally it would take under 5 minutes.
It took 95 sec to run Inventory/Wip Rec report. Normally that takes about
15 minutes.

Exporting our LaborDtl table from Vantage to Access 2000 normally takes
about 35 minutes. It took 4 minutes. This is via the Merant ODBC 3.6 SQL92
driver with 290,000 records.

This is compared with our production server which is a 6 Zeon 700Mhz 2MB
processors with 8GB Ram. The drives on our production server are two sets
of eight 15K Cheetah drives configured at RAID 10. Our OS is on one set of
four 10K RAID 10 drives.

One thing I noticed was our processors are hitting 100% usage and staying
there till the task is complete. I've felt that our investment in hi end
processors have not fully been realized because of the I/O bottleneck. I'm
very pleased with the performance. If the reliability proves to be as good
as the performance, I think its well worth the extra funds.

Wow, Jeremy! That's quite the server you got there.

Server envy aside, my question is this: What kind of redundant power does
the solid state drive have? We were pondering those drives here and that
question came up.

Their current model ships with an external power supply which of course, you
will want to plug into a UPS.

I created a 4096mb partition on a standard SCSI drive. I plan to run the
vantage backup every hour to the ramdrive and then copy the backup file to
the partition on the SCSI Drive. I will also backup the whole ramdrive
every night to the SCSI drive where it will be backed up to Tape media.

I am also working on coming up with a replacement for the standard Windows
2000 Shutdown so that whenever we shut down the server it does a complete
backup of the RAMDRIVE.

One thing that we just noticed is how hot the ramdrive gets. We will be
looking at getting an inexpensive cooling fan to mount in the PCI Slots
about and below it.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that if you purchase the RAMDrive from
Cenetek you can buy the DL version which is the RAMDRIVE PCI Board without
any Ram. Then you can buy your ram elsewhere and save at least 70%.

We paid $899.00 for the board and $312.00 for four 1GB standard ECC SDRAM
chips.

As far as the server goes, we paid $500.00 for each processor, $600.00 for
the best motherboard available and $1,200 for 2GB or RAMBUS. We had enough
parts to come up with the rest. Of course you can save allot of money if
you get a smaller motherboard and go with SDRAM.

One thing to remember when purchasing the DL boards is that, unless you use
certified RAM, there is no warranty. Personally, I have never found RAM to
be suspect enough to justify the premium but, with mission critical data, it
is a significant consideration.

To augment the cooling you may want to investigate a DDR heat sink. They're
cheap, effective and augment the effectiveness of the fan.

I thought about that but Cenetek laid the memory very close to each other
and at a 40 deg angle. To close for heat sinks. I thought that if I
installed cooling fans on both sides it might help enough.
