Software License Tracking Software

I have recently used GASP (pointed to it by Microsoft site) and found it
quite useful. Like you say with Track-IT it does have quite a list of
'unidentified software'. It does go further than looking at the name, size,
date of a file and looks at the version information as well.

When I downloaded (http://www.attest.com) it was free for 60 days for less
than 100 PCs which is perfect for taking a snapshot, attending to any
issues, taking another snapshot, print all your reports (or export to
Excel), and remove the software.

Brian, sounds like this would be useful for us as well. Can you give me the
web-site address for this software? Thanks

We are currently evaluating Track-it! from Blueocean Software. It can be
installed on a server and you run an audit program on each client PC, which
sends a list of all the software it recognizes and the hardware config. It
can also track the unrecognized software, if you wish. It also has help desk
tracking, but we are not looking at those features.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on software to track software
licenses for a company. My "spreadsheet" method is getting out of hand.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it. The web site for Blue Ocean Software is
http://www.blueocean.com

Incidentally, despite what their web-site says, the most recent version is
4.1. You can download the demo of 4.0 and then put the 4.1 patch on it. The
demo is limited to 30 days, and as we discovered, 10 PCs in your audit list.

Brian, if this seems to work for you could you let us know. About 6 months
ago I received a CD in the mail from them with the 10 PC demo version on it.
(don't recall the version #) I fought with it for about 3 days never did
get it to work. The audits detected about 1/10 of the software I knew was
on the PCs. I finally threw it away.
Their concepts sounded good and it may have just been my inability to use it
properly.

Hey Brian, How much are we talking about for Track-It? Is this a per users
basis cost.

The problem I have found with the Track-It software is not in what it *does*
detect, but more in what it *doesn't* detect. Basically, the software scans
all the executables on the PC and matches them up, by filename and size
(optionally) to its list of known software. You can modify the audit list to
include new programs (i.e. Progress client).

The problem I have found is that unless you know what unauthorized software
you are looking for, it is difficult to tell what unauthorized software is
on the system without going through the list of unrecognized software in the
audit report. For my system, the list of unrecognized software was about 10
pages long, as it includes every EXE file on my computer. Having said that,
you can sort the list by directory and scan through it fairly quickly.

As this is OT, anyone who wants more information can feel free to contact me
directly.
