I'm not sure where you heard wonderful things concerning Vantage running on MS
SQL server. Every comment I ever heard was that you would take a performance
hit running Vantage on SQL. It was however available for those who wanted it
(from a sales perspective).
I think probably the only advantage to using MS SQL Server was that there were a
lot of Microsoft Certified <insert title here> out there working in shops who
were comfortable with SQL and pushed for it. Can't imagine many owners of Job
Shops clamoring for or even caring about MS SQL Server. From my experience most
owners just want high performance that is cost effective from whatever db
platform they choose.
Just my 3 cents for the day...

I wouldn't count your chickens just yet. I heard lots of wonderful things
about Vantage running on MS SQL Server. After a year, thousands of dollars
wasted and allot of frustration, we returned to the Progress Database
because the product simply did not work. It makes me so happy to see that
they still advertise it as something to be proud of.
