This is all off of hearsay and some of this could be wrong, but what
I --->THINK<---- is happening, is that Progress is FINALLY getting their act
together and moving up to some current technology (.NET).
This --->SHOULD<--- give Epicor A LOT more to work with in regards to making
Vantage a better product for all of us (but I wouldn't count on it just yet,
I'm assuming this version would be 6.0) If progress betters its engine
significantly from what its been in the past, then this should allow us, if
Epicor programs 6.0 decently, to see some major changes and hopefully better
functionality and stability.
BUT! In regards to .NET, I wouldn't trust it at all!
Here is my experience with it. I have been developing now for about two
years with a slew of other very knowledgeable developers in the .NET
language, specifically C#.NET, SQL, and XML Web Services.
And well...... Microsoft has A LOT of work to do yet with .NET. We have had
SOOO many problems in the .NET environment (Major Crashes, Major stupid
errors, non-functional parts and components, ALL provided by Microsoft, and
a ton more) A LOT of these problems also have to do with SQL, which scares
me right now.
Now we come to find out that Microsoft is planning to release the first
service pack for the .NET language, which is a VERY good thing; however, it
kind of upsets us all that from what we are hearing so far, THEY WILL CHARGE
FOR IT! (Microsoft, go figure) But hopefully with .NET SP1 these things will
change.
Anyways, so far .NET in my opinion is still VERY shaky ground, BUT most
every software developer is moving to .NET which I suppose can't be a bad
thing. And I agree with most of it that it is a very nice language and
FINALLY VB.NET, C++.NET, and C#.NET are all basically one language.
The true magic behind .NET is the convergence of all compilers. And in
reference to Microsoft's ads, yeah everything so far in it is very tight, or
1 Degree. Just watch out every once in a while when things jump to a
hundred degrees. That's when to worry!
Hope my experience helps,
