Service Pak 2

Thanks. That will be my next approach if I don't repartition the drive
first.

Now if I could just get terminal services to work. I am wading through
chapter 15 in "Mastering Windows 2000 Server" as I type this. I think I
prefer books with more pictures. I tried the suggestions everyone posted.
My user is telling me he gets a "path not found" error when he tries to log
in under his domain log on. My admin account (which he is using) works
fine.

Ring a bell with anyone?

Mitchell,

This may be of some help ... Would it work for you to extract the setup
files first to another location THEN run the install from there. (when
installing a service pack is usually takes twice the amount of space during
install than it really needs after install).

To do this, do the following (this method is normally used for making new
Installation CD with the Service Packs Pre-Installed into the installation)

1. You must first run the service pack in "integrated mode", to do this,
open up a command window then type in the location of the service pack and
its name and then follow it with an "/x".

(i.e. D:\Win2KSP4.exe /x)

2. This should start the service pack install program, but SHOULD also
prompt you to "Choose Directory For Extracted Files", type in whichever
directory you want to store these files in.

(i.e. X:\ExtractedServicePackFiles\)

3. After the files have been extracted, you should be able to go and run the
update program in the update folder to begin the pack installation.

(i.e. X:\ExtractedServicePackFiles\Update\Update.exe)

This way, the service pack will not extract temp install files to your hard
drive.

If this doesn't work let me know and I will see if I can get you updated
information, I'm saying this all off the top of my head, so I might be
mistaken on something, but the /x is the key.

I already have service pak 2, I'm trying to install service pak 4 and all of
the security updates. I wasn't too worried about the latest round of virus
attacks since we keep our NAV up to date. Right up until I realized that my
salesmen could bring something in on their laptops.
A little more paranoia on my part would probably be a good thing.

I had Epicor set up our production server two years ago when we purchased
the software. At the time I didn't know anything about windows server.
Still don't if you read some of the questions I post.

Long story short this "expert" saddled me with a 2 gig boot partition. So I
am continually running out of disk space on the boot drive. Now that I have
a test server I will move my production database over soon and repartition
the drive.

I'm still working up the courage to trash something that works and be
confident that I can reinstall all of the pieces again.

And of course, if you do this and then want to uninstall the service pack,
you are thoroughly hosed.

To gain some space, first empty your TEMP folders (go to a command prompt
and type "SET TEMP" to find out where they are), kill any memory dumps
(*.dmp) in SYSTEMROOT and USERPROFILE, look for patch and update source
files that can go away, etc.

Assuming you've installed SP1, look in SYSTEMROOT for a folder called
$NTServicePackUninstall$. You can delete this before installing SP2.
Additionally, you can delete the $NTUninstallQ??????$ folders, where ??????
represents some Q number. After deleting the folders, you can remove the
uninstall info from the registry. Alternatively, go here
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm and download the
featured tool (note the Win2K caveat).

But this begs the question, why are you installing SP2 rather than SP4?

have fun,

I have a Win2K server on service pack 2 that I am trying to update. I'm out
of space on the boot drive. Under the WINNT folder are a number of folders
that start with $NTuninstal.... They all contain large numbers of files.

Can these be safely deleted? I think they are uninstall files from when I
added SP2 and various updates. If so, what is the correct way to delete
them?

yes,
these are files that were saved when you install a service pack. When you install the latest service pack just tell it to not save a backup copy.

But moving the pagefile is also a good idea. Keep it off the

Mitchell,

This may be of some help ... Would it work for you to extract the setup
files first to another location THEN run the install from there. (when
installing a service pack is usually takes twice the amount of space during
