Server Issues Blank Title 82550

I'll third the Ben endorsement. I took a class he gave for Administrators and he really knows his stuff, both the SQL and Progress side.

I'm on .405 with MSSQL and haven't had this problem. I'd be curious what the exact behavior and error message are since what you describe doesn't sound familiar.

I myself have given up on the SQL fulltext indexes for now at least. I simply cannot keep things working when I have the indexes update at night. Even with just the Part table index it will lock the Part table randomly and block all writes until you kill the SQLAgent task that's updating the indexes. You can see the blocked processes in the SQL Task Monitor. It doesn't sound like that's what you're getting though - my users just see the client hang waiting for the BO method to complete (which it never does).

I'll second everything that Vic says below. Ben knows his stuff.

I have your same configuration and I have never had this happen.

Is Progress and SQL on the same server? (mine is)

What else is on that server?

Make sure your MSSQL is SP3. I saw a HUGE improvement across the board
after installing SP3.

Are your Progress database schema holders read only? (if not, do that)

Have you went through the SQL performance tuning document from Epicor?
(if not, do that)

Do you have SQL Full Text Population running during the day by chance?
(if so, reschedule the job for nightly or weekly)

I would recommend also, if you have some money, to contact Ben Nixon at
Epicor and have him do a remote server review.. He'll login via WebEx
for a few hours and look in every nook and cranny and let you know what
the red flags are and how to fix them. He's "the expert" at Epicor with
regards to Progress/SQL customers.

Did this issue just start?

Subject: [Vantage] Server Issues

I am on Vantage 8.03.407C and have it on a SQL server with the Open Edge
Services. Does anyone else have the issue where the service just come
non responding during the day or at random times?

There are times that people are working and Vantage just stops and says
server not available. I go into restart the services in Progress and
they tell me they are stateless are shut themselves down. I try to
restart them there are I will go into Windows Services and try to
restart the Open Edge service and that sometimes will work. But 90% of
the time I just have to reboot the SQL server to get everything to work
again.

Am I the only one having this issue or are there other users out there
having this same problem?

Thanks,
Greg

I don't have exactly the same problem, but my task and process app services will stop functioning after about a week of continuous use. There is no indications that anything is wrong, things just stop getting processed in Vantage. Usually a restart of the two app services fixes the problem without any interruptions to my users.

It sounds like your problem is a little bit more serious. Are you running any antivirus software on your server? If so, don't.

Another possible source of your problem is a misbehaved BAQ. A bad BAQ can bring your server to its knees. The next time you have this problem see if you can find out if someone was running a BAQ or a report based on a BAQ at the time it stopped working.

There is also a problem with labor entry on a job causing an infinite loop. I don't know the details off the top of my head, but it was reported to be fixed in 408B. I'n not sure it affected 407C.

Are there any clues to what is going on in your mfgsys server log or your Windows event logs?

I do restart my Task and Process servers nightly, along with SonicMQ. It keeps things stable.
