Scheduling in 9.05.702A

The way we do this is similar we create a resource group for each operation and we assign resources (people) to the resource group based on how many people work that operation. The resources are given calendars based on the entire workday (avg 96 hrs) based on 2 shifts and overtime. this way it is scheduled as you want it to be. if there can be more than one person working on different jobs at the same time you can set that up in the resource group also. in the job you can also say how many scheduling blocks to assign.

We are in the process of setting up the scheduling module on E9. We have run into a snag. We want to be able to schedule across 3 shifts. What we are seeing is the schedule picks the first work force resource and schedules the operation to run for as many hours as that person is available. For example the operation should take 18 hours, my 1st shift work force is available for 8 hours, second shift available for 10 hours. So you would assume that the workforce resource would schedule 18 hours. But it doesn’t, it schedules the workforce resource over a 3 day period, 8 hours day one, 8 day two and 2 hours day 3. We don’t understand why it doesn’t schedule 8 hours on 1st shift and then pick the 2nd shift workforce to continue for another 10 hours. Is there anyone out there who is scheduling over multiple shifts? Could you share how you have your workforce setup?

The workaround is to create a resource with a schedule spanning three
shifts. This one resource would represent three employees.
It works for us, we just have to remember to manually adjust these
resources when our head counts change.

So how do you deal with that? Do you not schedule your work force?

I just get around it by not having shifts. Our first shift works 8 hours M-F and second shift works 10 hours M-Th so I schedule each resource for 18 hours a day M-Th and 8 hours on F.

I agree, that's the best work around... for the most part you'll only start to feel that pinch when your heavily invested in using APS capabilities..
