Scheduled Jobs vs. Released Jobs

Another option is not to enter a date. We don't.

In my past life, jobs were schedule when an order was received, but
not released to the floor until a week or two before they were
scheduled. But from what I have been told from Vantage support, in
order for the system to suggest purchase orders for parts related to
these jobs, you must release the job to the floor. I find this hard to
believe since a purchase part could have a 6 week lead time, so you
must release it to the floor at least 6 weeks in advance in order for
purchasing to be prompted to buy the parts.

So my questions are: 1)does anyone find this unusual?; 2)has anyone
found a way around this - maybe I can accomplish the same results by
a different method?; 3) what is the difference between scheduling and
releasing a job?

BTW - we are Vantage 6.10.533 and we do not have MRP.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about Purchasing Suggestions but I know for a fact that parts required on a job will show on time phase as soon as the job is created whether it's released or not.

I would be surprised (but not necessarily shocked) if the purchasing suggestion logic didn't match the time phase logic.

Having the early visibility was one of the original design criteria with the Vantage product. Philosophically it was decided that the benefits of earlier visibility outweighed any negatives. Many companies (ours is a prime example) with long material lead times times need this early visibility.

I'm not convinced that they gave you the right information. When you run MRP, NO jobs are Engineered or Released but PO suggestions ARE generated. I would call again and ask this specific question.

From my understanding, if a job is not released, you can not issue material to it or enter in any labor. I think your initial logic was correct. Scheduling a job gives you a clear picture of when and what needs to be manufactured. If releasing a job is the trigger to kick of PO suggestions, what's the point of having that option then.

Let us know what you find out!

Thanks for all the replies. After doing some further searching, here is
what I found out. Contrary to what Vantage Support center told me, you can
Generate PO Suggestions by Scheduling a job without having it to Release the
job. However, after talking to my Epicor Consultant, I found out the trick
is the Cut-Off Date that is used when you Generate PO Suggestions.

For example, if you have a job scheduled for 03/20/06 and you have a lead
time of 8 weeks for one of the materials, then that material needs to be
ordered by 01/23/06. In order for the system to Generate a PO Suggestion
the Cut-Off Date used in the Generate PO Suggestion screen needs to be the
date the material is due in....03/20/06. Therefore, internally I will set
instructions to my employees to run the Cut-Off Date using 3 months out (or
at least a week longer than our longest material lead time in our system).
In order to include long lead times, you will have suggestions for the same
job (let's say the material lead time of 3 weeks) that may not need to be
ordered until 02/27/06. Therefore those suggestions could be ignored until
closer to the 02/27/06 date.

Hopefully, I have not made this issue clear as mud for anyone!
